A Wise Choice

The psalmist is teaching us a valuable lesson about interpersonal communication. He lets us know that the words he will speak are from God because he thoughtfully pursued His truth. Psalm 49 focuses on the future of the wicked and trust in earthly wealth. The psalmist concludes that their glory will not follow them in death, and we can control the urge to fear rich people.

The “OUCH” Moments

As a Christian, I've committed to being a lifelong learner, and that heart posture means there will be mistakes or what I like to call the "ouch" moments. It's the moments where your perspective (and pride) clouds your vision within a situation, and you're called out.

Typically, by someone you value and trust. You then see where you went wrong in your thinking/actions and receive the rebuke.

Ouch!

It reminds me of an experience I shared in my book "Saved by Choice." "I remember one specific instance at the end of a meeting when our leader asked if there was anything we wanted to add to the prayer list, so we would take the final moments to pray for each other.

This World is Not My Home

Evil simply will not prevail. We often must be reminded of this truth. The author of Ecclesiastes discusses how evil things have become due to the oppressors.

The oppressed have no one to comfort them. Things were so bad he even says the dead and unborn are better off not to have seen the evil taking place. This book was written centuries before Jesus was born, and I could only imagine what the author saw to make him declare such harsh sentiments. But we need only peek at the evil happening in our current day to maybe get an idea.

Hello, my name is Lisa, and I am a recovering perfectionist.

I have a vivid memory of being the last child in my kindergarten class to finish a drawing. I kept coloring long after everyone else had finished, to the point where my teacher had to tell me to stop so we could move on to another activity, and when she did, I promptly burst into tears. Why? Because my drawing wasn’t right. It wasn’t perfect.

It was all downhill from there.

I’m not a fan of mosquitoes. I think they are very disrespectful insects. There are certain areas I will not travel into because I know they are out for blood. I allowed these tiny ‘beasts’ to dictate where I went and when. So is that an excuse or prudent thinking?

The Proverbs compares the foolish to wise, lazy to hard-working, and righteous to the wicked. The pithy sayings are simple, to-the-point convictions that we can use to begin self-examination. Proverbs 22:13 is one example that doesn’t appear as frequently in the book; however, the instruction is plain.

I have countless experiences that I could share concerning God’s abundant grace. He spoke to the center of my heart when I was discouraged because of unsettling events. Being liberal with our time, assets, or talents is scientifically proven to increase joy. Our overall understanding of happiness propels us to bond with others. One could say that great relationships are a by-product of generosity.

Could you imagine a society that celebrates charity above consumption?

Well, until that glorious day when Christ returns, we can use Proverbs 22:9 as a guide. Consider your ‘stuff.’ Do you own things that would be beneficial to someone else? Of course, you do; we all have such items. The next step is to consider being generous.

Defending Opportunities

God’s thoughts are higher, and His plans are always good. In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, he continues to defend his ministry. In verse 14, we are encouraged by the mindful transition from sorrow to joy.

Like Paul, we will encounter people or groups that will frustrate and cause pain to our hearts. (2 Corinthians 2:3-4)

I Would Never

Can you imagine the incredible pain of a close friend betraying your trust? Or worse yet, being abandoned at a crucial time during sickness? Let’s face it, recovering from illness or grief leaves one feeling vulnerable.

That is one theme running throughout today’s scriptures. From Job, the faithful servant, to the Apostle Paul we can see how trust, loyalty, truth, and honesty play a huge role in the cycle of life.

Hurt Hides Truth

I’ve been on both sides of trust: loyal to a fault and a discouraging disappointment. I’m not sure which hurt worse, the breaking of my heart or the Holy Spirit revealing my errors. In both cases, I learned valuable lessons:
