Join us as we celebrate the birthdays of two comedic legends. Christopher Rock, actor, producer, and filmmaker was born in 1965 in Andrews, South Carolina. Gary Wayne Coleman, comedian, actor, and writer, was born in 1968 in Zion, Illinois. He was a major child start of television in the 1970s and 1980s and starred in the iconic show "Good Times" when it premiered in 1974 on CBS across the US. The rich history of black comedians throughout time has helped shaped the face of American comedy today.

February 7th

On this day,

Dr. Carter G. Woodson started the first Negro History Week to “extend and deepen the study and scholarship on Black History” in 1926.  Decades later, it was expanded to cover the whole of February.  He chose the middle of February because America celebrated the birthdays of former president Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two towering figures in this history.

February 5th

On this day,

Radical Reconstructionist Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania on this day in 1866 proposed in Congressional debate on the Freedmen’s Bureau the idea of continuing the practice that started during the war which allocated white confiscated lands to freed Africans after the Civil War.  Newly installed president Andrew Johnson, an ally of the Confederates, ensured that this policy did not become law.  It was the idea of Forty Acres and a Mule, which reasoned that the newly freed would need resources to live.

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks, Civil Rights activist whose actions sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, was born on this day in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama.

On this day,

Autherine Lucy, the first Black person to be accepted at the University of Alabama after a court order, enrolled for classes in 1956.  Three days later, on February 6, the school suspended her saying that she was responsible for riots engaged in by a white mob of over 1000 people.
