C and Katie have mixed feelings about metaphors of biological parenthood being applied to humans who share their life with a dog (or two). Neither one of them wants to be called a pet parent, dog dad/mom, or have a "furbaby" - and C shares why it may do more harm than good if these terms are being used by dog trainers working with behavior clients. We also talk about terms such as adoption, owner and guardian.

Canine nerd level: 1/3 (for pet and companion dog owners)

C talks with evolutionary biologist and ethologist Marc Bekoff about A Dog's World: Imagining the Lives of Dogs in a World without Humans. C's translation of this book was recently released in German, and they took this opportunity to invite Marc on the podcast!

By the way: I would also love to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to two Austrian dog training colleagues who happen to be biologists, Christian Holeček and Bettina Wernisch! Thank you for helping me find the correct German equivalents for the scientific terms in the English book! You both rock!

Marc shares about living with dogs in the mountains outside of Boulder, Colorado, and C challenges the argument that dogs would be able to learn how to hunt cooperatively. Marc, of course, has lots of answers to get all of us thinking.

C talks to Liesl, a Guatemalan anthropologist who is currently living, researching and studying in the Pacific Northwest. Liesl shares her experiences with racism, unexpected experiences that have made her laugh and the different people she has crossed paths with. She gives us a little glimpse into her current research project with a community of Guatemalan migrants, recognizes how different cultural and experiential backgrounds make us experience the world and the people around us differently and helps us make the step from social signalling - like having a Black Lives Matter sign or a Ukrainian flag in your front yard - to meaningful action.

C talks about how to build a casual game of tug and fetch, put it on cue, and use it to reinforce simple life skills. This episode assumes your dog already has some basic interest in toys, but the behavior needs fine-tuning: maybe they chase, but don't return the toy, or maybe they play fetch, but not tug. C talks with their friend Rodrigo about what it was like to grow up as a gay boy in a conservative city in the 90ies, queer rights in Mexico today and life in the city of Guanajuato as a queer person. Rodrigo shares his experiences of being bullied in school and at home, compulsory soccer and loneliness. We philosophize about the next generation of parents, the growing number of Mexican states with equal marriage rights and non-discrimination laws and end in a place of cautious optimism.

Today, Rodrigo is a linguist and Spanish teacher embracing his queerness and enjoying life in the city of Guanajuato with his sidekick Orisa, a one-of-a-kind Jack Russel Terrier.

C, Peter and Amy Miller discuss their perspective on living or working with dogs who don't appreciate being touched by strangers. This episode consists of three distinct stories: Peter's experience as a dog walker, boarder and vacation-experience provider, Amy's perspective as the owner of the lovely, but opinionated Marley and his protocol for meeting new (and familiar) people and C's experience as a trainer working with people who share their lives with dogs who'd rather not be petted. We don't only talk about our personal experiences, but also speculate on where the human desire to use our hands to greet dogs may stem from - and why canines might consider this rude. Most importantly, we dispel the myth that the best way of greeting a new dog is by sticking your hand in their face to sniff.
