Welcome to Our Own Voices Live! This is the 2nd Saturday of February, Happy Black History Month!

 All year Facebook, many Black publications and web sites have focused on Black Love, Black male/female relationships, Black women and why more Black women aren’t married.

 For those that believe in marriage the marriage rates for all Americans is low and for African American’s it‘s even lower at about 28% and steadily heading downward.

70% of Black households are headed by single parents, usually women.  Most of these households are below the poverty line.  We also see that teens are increasingly getting into trouble.  Even the army won’t accept but 20% of all 18-24 year olds due to things such as domestic violence, drug use, felonies, obesity, drop outs and poor academic performance in general.

An alarming number of Black males are in jail, roughly 60% of the over 2.5 million inmates are blacks,1 in 4 college blacks are males, 11% of black men date/marry outside their cultural group along with 8% of Black women

Have Black people given up on traditional marriage to each other and in general and how does this affect Black people and America?

 

A popular refrain is, “it takes a village.” 

I love the term and concept but I want to know, “what about the hut?”  

Have we begun to focus so much on others taking care of our children that we are advocating some of our responsibility to other (the village) without doing our part to raise our own children properly?  In other words is it becoming a cop out?

Welcome to Our Own Voices Live!  This is the first Saturday of February, so Happy Black History Month!

All through the year the plight of Blacks in America is batted around but seemingly with a certain level of discomfort.  African Americans get one month a year to explore their history and seek a better understanding of who we are as well as share our rich history with others.  Let’s talk about our status, what worked, what hasn’t and where we go from here.

 

Some area to explore is our heritage and rich history both here in the new world and back in the Mother Land of Africa. 

What have been some of our gains from slavery to now?

How had desegregation helped and hurt us

How has our politics affected us both pro & con?            

Has the election of the first Black President taken us to a post racist America or just re-exposed the true racism that always existed?

Should Black people be African Americans or just Americans?

Do Black People need a leader and why do some Black people say no?

Has there ever been a Black Agenda and if so, was it successful and do we need a new one now?

 

Next week is Valentine’s Day and we will explore Black Love and Relationships.

We often hear, “it takes a village,” What about the hut?

The President was in rare form during his SOTU address.  He hit on job training for the supposed 3,000,000 jobs that go unfilled due to not enough unskilled labor.  I have been waiting for someone to mention this.  President challenged the Republicans to pass some of his proposed ideas.  Looks like the Prez has his groove back!

President Obama also took a swing to Las Vegas after getting a finger stuck in his face by Arizona Government Jane Brewer.  What did you think about that?  Was she being disrespectable to the POTUS?

Las Vegas had a warmer reception and yours truly had a chance to meet President Obama.  What a great experience!  Not so sure hementioned the things most important to folks living in Las Vegas.  What was some of the things that you heard and liked and things that you wanted to hear and didn't?

Join us as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy and as we wrap up King's Week in Las Vegas.  With special guest Dr. Sonya Douglass Horsford, a senior resident scholar of education with The Lincy Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she focuses on the history of education in the U.S., politics of education, and role of schools in society.  Dr. Horsford will be the keynote speaker at the Fourth Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Candle Light Vigil on Sunday, January 15.
