Queer life is usually synonymous with metropolitan, city areas, but that is just one dimension of being queer in Australia. In this episode we shine the light on regional Australia, what its like being queer in rural areas in workplaces that aren't boardrooms and offices.

In this episode we talk with Peter Puskic (he/him), a biologist, studying human impacts on animals and their habitats. Pete grew up in regional WA before moving to Melbourne where he studied zoology and archaeology.

The queer workplace spans across all industries, in this episode we are casting things out to the creative folks, starting with artist and writer Samuel Leighton-Dore (he/him).

Samuel is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work unpacks how masculinity and gender norms engender us to suppress our emotions, desires and conform to heteronormative social roles. Through his artistry Samuel endeavours to celebrate our unique identities and create a space for us to be in touch with our emotions and aspirations. As a self-employed artist, Samuel discusses the obstacles and stigma around productivity during COVID-19 and how he has been able to balance his creative projects whilst prioritising his mental health.

Hot off the back of our ‘LGBITIQA+ in tech’ events, Carol (she/her) will be joining us to talk about her professional journey as a self-taught software engineer and how she navigated transitioning later in her life whilst working for Silicon Valley tech start-ups.

Carol's resume includes being a founding member of a $10 million venture capital backed start-up. Today, Carol is a prominent LGBTQI+ role model herself, inspiring queer youth and sharing her career and personal wisdom as a transwoman in tech.

There are many ways to succeed and thrive in the workplace as a queer person, and one of the most effect ways is to seek out a role model, and see someone in your shoes thriving.

In this conversation we discuss the highs and lows, and the pros and cons for coming out in the workplace with Out For Australia’s very own People Officer, Annabelle Chee (she/her).
