Out of Self-Deception

Listen Later

All right, so we’re diving back into our series Stop Lying. The ultimate goal is to get us walking in raw, real authenticity. But the gap between lies and falsehood on one side, and truth, rawness, and authenticity on the other, is a very large gap. Simply saying stop lying doesn’t help us bridge that gap or guide us through the process.

So let’s look at a story in the Bible that lays this out from the very beginning. This passage is foundational, and it helps us see how the process unfolded in creation so we can better understand what we ourselves have gone through, what we are going through, and what others are experiencing as well.

At creation, when man was formed, he was initiated into secure attachment. In Genesis chapter 3, Adam and Eve lived in joyful, secure attachment with God. They were connected. They were in relationship. They were in alignment with Him. Genesis chapter 2 says, “They were naked and not ashamed.” Naked and not ashamed communicates full vulnerability, full transparency, and complete authenticity. Nothing is more raw and real than being naked and yet unashamed.

In that state, they were fully known, fully seen, and fully safe. To be naked and not ashamed is a place of ultimate strength and security. Everything was functioning as it should; alignment, attachment, connection. They were in a deep relationship with God. They were connected to His presence. They were connected to one another without rift or conflict. Their attachment was complete and secure.

They also understood where they came from. They knew their origin and their source. That mattered because origin defines identity. If we believe we originate from chance, from goo, or from animals, our identity is shaped accordingly. But the Bible establishes from the beginning that we were created by God. From origin springs identity. Just as water derived from a pure mountain spring is refreshing, life-giving, and valuable, so identity is shaped by its source.
