Out of the Box Church Podcast Hosted by Pastor Dustin Young

Pastor Dustin and his wife, Candice Renee Young, celebrate Out of the Box Church’s 8-year anniversary (July 15, 2018) by sharing how the church began, their ministry background, and key moments of God’s provision. They recount being sent from City Church in New Orleans back to Oklahoma, choosing the name “Out of the Box,” and finding an affordable meeting place at the renovated old city hall for $15 per service, including early struggles with small attendance and limited resources. They describe continuing outreach, family-style worship, growth through COVID with park services using an FM transmitter, moving into their current building in July 2021, and building a stronger leadership team. They also share a medical crisis where Dustin flat-lined for five and a half minutes due to a thyroid storm and was revived, emphasizing prayer, faithfulness, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.

Pastor Dustin sits down with elder Bible teacher Mike Merritt for a deep dive into Kingdom Authority — exploring what it really means to walk in the authority God has given us, and why great faith and authority are inseparably linked.

Starting in Matthew 8 with the centurion's remarkable faith, Pastor Dustin and Mike unpack how understanding submission to authority — Christ's authority, His Word, and the people God places in our lives — is actually the pathway to walking in true spiritual authority ourselves. They trace this theme through Ephesians 6 (the armor of God and the shield of faith), 1 John (confidence before God), Romans 13 (civil authority), Hebrews 13 (church leadership), and more.

Topics covered:

• Why being under authority comes before being in authority

• The connection between faith and spiritual authority

• How authority provides order and protection against the enemy

• Submitting to God's delegated authority in the home, church, and government

• Avoiding deception by staying connected to godly counsel

• How a healthy fear of God shapes obedience and faith

Thanks for tuning in — we love you all! Stay tuned for the next episode as this Kingdom Authority series continues.

Spirit, Soul & Body: Learning to Be Led by the Spirit (Out of the Box Church Podcast)

Pastor Dustin welcomes returning guest Patrick Murphy to the Out of the Box Church podcast for a Bible-study conversation on understanding believers as three-part beings—spirit, soul, and body—and why this topic, along with being led by the Spirit, is foundational for Christians. Using Philippians 1:6 and 1 Thessalonians 5:23, they discuss God’s ongoing sanctifying work, “peace” as nothing missing and nothing broken, and God’s desire for wholeness without conflict between the three parts. Patrick explains functions of the spirit (conscience, intuition, communion), the soul (mind, will, emotions), and the body (five senses), emphasizing discernment between being led by the spirit versus the mind, the importance of timing, and renewing the mind through the Word. Patrick offers a free digital copy of his book “Building on the Rock” at acts29mi.com and notes his other books are available on Amazon.

Pastor Dustin returns to the Out of the Box Church podcast after a hiatus due to hip surgery and shares insights on the wisdom of God from Proverbs 8, titled “Wisdom is Calling. Will you answer?” He teaches that wisdom is public and speaks at life’s crossroads, that it is pure and unchanging, and that it is more valuable than any earthly gain. Wisdom hates evil, confronts compromise, and must be paired with the fear of the Lord as alignment, not mere reverence. He explains that leadership and authority require wisdom to establish righteousness, that wisdom was present from the beginning and is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and that receiving wisdom brings life and favor while rejecting it is destructive. He closes with practical calls to ask God for wisdom, choose obedience over opinion, and pursue Christ intentionally, plus church and podcast announcements.

Pastor Dustin interviews Cole Stevens, a trucking executive and born-again Christian running for Oklahoma House District 51, about his path from OU baseball to the family trucking business and into policy advocacy. Stevens describes discovering widespread use of non–English-speaking and allegedly illegal drivers in commercial trucking, prompting driver interviews, collaboration with American Truckers United, and work with Oklahoma legislators to pass Senate Bill 20, the Safe and Secure Roads Act, with an emergency clause and a ceremonial signing by Governor Stitt. He recounts writing Senator Markwayne Mullin, subsequent federal attention including a Trump executive order on English language proficiency audits, and Oklahoma’s Operation Guardian sting under a 287(g) ICE agreement. Stevens explains the national push for “Delilah’s Law,” tied to a crash involving Delilah Coleman, and efforts to gather signatures on a wrapped trailer while campaigning, emphasizing prayer, public safety, and Christian engagement in politics.
