Independent artist and creative producer Maeve Marsden is a master storyteller. She speaks on her life in the arts, the necessary messiness of her 20s, queer stories and the way they’re shared, how to fist fruit, and her epic love story. Maeve sat down with Mia ahead of her appearance at All About Women at the Sydney Opera House.

Sophie Hardcastle is an author, artist, screenwriter and scholar. Their name lives on the cover of the critically acclaimed ‘Running Like China: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Madness’ , and ‘Breathing Under Water’, and most recently, ‘Below Deck'. They’re also the co-creator, co-writer and co-director of the online series ‘Cloudy River’. Their story also spans the globe: In 2017, Sophie was an artist-in-residence with Chimu Adventures in Antarctica, and they’ve lived, studied, and created in Australia and the UK too.  

Sophie told Mia about a life spent in and on oceans and seas (and the thousand’s of lives that have taken place there), rebuilding from trauma, and stories deposited in pockets of glacial ice.

Hellen Rose has made a few cameos on Out of the Box before - both as a character in someone else’s stories, and the singer of a track chosen by a previous guest. She is a performance artist, lead singer of Soul Crime, and co-producer of Gittoes Productions. We paid a bit of lip service to Hellen last year when we interviewed her husband and long time collaborator Dr George Gittoes, but she has a whole practice outside of the work she does with George. It spans mediums, ideas, decades, genres, and of course, the globe. Hellen also treated Mia to a live performance during this episode.

Peter Day is a South West Sydney artist who's worked professionally for more 45 years. He specialises in both fine art and site-specific community engaged public art.

He sat down with Mia to run through his earliest memories as a creative kid winning prizes and competitions, navigating his practice with a visual impairment, managing Kirk Gallery - a crash pad for musos, his part in the fruition of Double J and his stint as a broadcaster, growing up in his 40s, and moving forward establishing his role in strengthening community placemaking as an artist.

Karla Dickens is a cross cultural artist. She also crosses mediums on this episode of Out of the Box: poring through memories both sonic and visual. She talked about the music she loves, the places it takes her, and how much doing so feels like rifling through an old box of photos. Those photos show us a life that spans the city and the bush, a life that, at times, was coloured by psychedelia, and a life rooted in the Wiradjuri nation.

Dr Stephen Jurd is an addiction medicine specialist psychiatrist, Clinical Associate Professor at University of Sydney and has been instrumental in developing addiction recovery services and 12 step recovery centres across Australia, including The Sydney Retreat. Mia and Stephen sit down to talk about his personal experiences with addiction and how this lead him to specialise in such a stigmatised area of medicine.

2021 was a huge year for Out of the Box, and we're celebrating that by doing a huge end-of-year wrap-up. 

We connected over Zoom a lot this year, and we walked through the chronologies of some very big stories. We looked at topics like race, gender, sexuality, politics, art, and religion.

She sat down with Mia ahead of her first solo show, ‘I Hope My Keyboard Doesn’t Break’ to chat about the way people don’t pay attention to the radio (R.I.P), growing up in a small town with too many pubs, receiving a gift from former prime minister Kevin Rudd, the dad rat from ‘Ratatouille’, and the full-circle experience of being asked to work for The Chaser.
