The Des Plaines, Illinois Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s (www.dpchamber.com) “Veterans Back-to-Work Boot Camp”, brought to you by Rivers Casino, is returning for a 7th year in a row this Fall. They are searching for recent military veterans and/or any veterans in transition, who have been honorably discharged, and NEW this year they are accepting applications from SPOUSES of ACTIVE-DUTY MILITARY MEMBERS to apply to be selected for this transformative opportunity.

Upon completion of the program, each participant will receive a career-enhancing professional development package valued at more than $10,000.00. The remaining VETERAN/MILITARY SPOUSE applications will be shared with our HR committee for hiring consideration and will be invited to our Des Plaines Chamber “Fall into a New Career” Career Fair on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.

Since the program started in 2017, they have had over (140) Veterans graduate, and many of them have gone on to find meaningful careers in our area.

The 2023 selected participants will receive the tools they need to transition into the workforce to find the job of their dreams.

You subconsciously and passively choose how will react to any given situation and how that situation will affect you. Consider taking a conscious, active approach for your reactions instead. Be actively engaged in co-creating the life you desire.

Adversity is a “serious or continued difficulty or misfortune.” How are you going to react to the adversity you are facing?

Adversity creates hardships, and challenges in your life you need to react to and overcome. Are you going to react in a positive, productive way or in a negative, destructive way?

The health club I belong to has an elite junior volleyball program.

One thing I noticed is that a majority of the volleyball players are female, high-school age players that all look the same. They are all tall, about 5’8″ to 5’10”, thin, all have shoulder length hair, tied up in pony tails. They all are wearing the same volleyball club uniforms, so they all look very similar, almost identical. It is very difficult with just a casual observation to tell any of the players apart.

To me, the volleyball players reminded me of box of pencils,

Volleyball pencils.

Of course there were also other athletes on the volleyball court. Athletes who were taller, shorter and had different body types (e.g., thicker, thinner, etc.) than the other athletes on the volleyball court. These athletes were the “outliers.”

Malcom Gladwell, in his book, Outliers, explains why “outliers” are some of the most successful people in the world.

So how can you become a successful outlier? Try reprogramming your subconscious.

Reprogramming your subconscious to become an outlier allows you to make a positive impact in your own life helps you co-create the life you truly desire.

I am definitely an outlier. How about you?

There is a dog named Dotty, a Dalmatian mix, that lived at the Hilbrae Rescue Kennels in the UK.

According to Anna Gragert at My Modern Met, Dotty was viewed over 10,000 times for adoption over a six-year period.  Not a single person wanted to adopt Dotty.  Not one.

Even after 10,000 rejections, you can still see the energy, the enthusiasm and the love in the face of this dog.

After 10,000 viewings and 10,000 rejections, nobody adopted Dotty.  She was called “Briton’s loneliest dog.”  Yet, Dotty never stopped wagging her tail at the kennel.

If you were rejected 10,000 times trying something, would you give up hope?

Or would you make a 10,001 attempt to try again?

How can you address rejection in your own life?

The next time you are rejected in any situation, pause, take a deep breath, smile and think about Dotty the Dalmatian that was rejected 10,000 times then adopted.

Dotty the Dalmatian ended up in a better place and so can you…Believe it.

An “opportunity” is “a favorable set of circumstances, a chance for advancement or progress.”

An “opportunity” is also “an appropriate or favorable time to accomplish something, or accomplish something new.”

All of you are presented with new opportunities in your life.

Does opportunity really knock?

An opportunity does allow you to go from where you are right now to a new endpoint.

An arc is “a smooth curve joining two endpoints.”

Does your new opportunity allow you to smoothly travel between two endpoints?

When opportunity knocks at your door, how can you evaluate it to determine if it is right for you?

Anytime you are presented with a new opportunity, evaluate it with an “ARC.”
