Outerfocus 11 - Gertrude Käsebier (Nima Taradji)

Listen Later

"The key to artistic photography is to work out your own thoughts, by yourselves. Imitation leads to certain disaster. New ideas are always antagonised. Do not mind that. If a thing is good it will survive’’ - Gertrude Käsebier

We are joined this week by, Nima Taradji, an Iranian-American documentary and editorial photographer who is based in Chicago. Nima picked up his first camera from his journalist Father at the age of 10 years old, and made the decision to switch from lawyer to full time photographer back in 2015. We discuss Nima’s journey from childhood to joining agency Polaris, where he embarked on a wealth of projects and gained access to cover events such as The Inauguration of Donald J. Trump.

In our History of photography segment we look at Gertrude Käsebier known to be a big proponent of women in photography. Gertrude started her photography career at the later age of 37, where she enrolled in art school. We touch on how her unhappy marital life influenced her work, and how her professional relationship with Alfred Stieglitz went from artistic admiration to distain some years later.
