I’m not sure exactly how I came across Brunel’s photography, but I’d been following him for a while on instagram before I found out he had a book in the works with a new publishing platform that was also making a book of my Working Mens Club photographs.
When we recorded this conversation, Brunel was just finishing a multimedia project called, Can You See Me Now that you can see by clicking the link.
As with all of his work there is an honesty, and an uncomfortable truth.......

Hope all is well, and happy Freedom Day! (UK only) It’s good to know that the pandemic is finally over (insert eye roll emoji here)
If you too are just staying home and are not out licking earholes and door handles, then we thank you for your service. Here’s a new episode of Outerfocus to while away the the hours. Well, at lest one of them.
Being a sucker for all things Elvis, Drag, Crufts, Pin up and the like, Shelby Alexander caught my attention a few months back. It seemed.........

We’re back! Well, for a short season at least.
Hope you’re all doing well, and have survived the last year. It has been a bit brutal, I know, but hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel and we can start looking forward to some sort of normality.
First up we have a conversation with the very excellent, Dan Wood.
I first met Dan when he gave a talk about his work, Gap in the Hedge, at the Martin Parr Foundation back in 2019. I was taken by his honest, humorous and humble nature, and his photographs and stories really resonated with me and........

Outerfocus turns 60.
I hope that you are all well during what is becoming a very troubled time, on a global scale. I believe that there is a different future on the other side and this ‘down time’ can help us to focus on what that will mean.
This week I’m afforded the opportunity to talk with the very wonderful, Jane Baldwin about her long term project about women, culture, human rights and the environmental issues that threaten the communities of Ethiopia’s Omo River Valley and Kenya’s Lake Turkana watershed.
I’d rather not get into it here but this conversation has made me think. Especially about what else I could be doing moving forward. I very much hope that you enjoy this conversation and the stories and insight herein.

Jane Baldwin, an American artist and educator, uses black and white film and audio recordings to document her photographic work. You made through another two weeks. That means we’re two weeks closer to things getting back to normal. I hope you are all doing well and finding your own methods for not going completely mad. I think I’m starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel……..
This week I talk with the very wonderful, Lauren Maccabee

Hello again! Another two weeks passes……
I hope that you are all doing well and are still coping during this very peculiar time. I think it’s a real struggle for people to get a grasp of what they should be doing when they can’t get out and do the thing they do. Me included, but I’ve decided to not concern myself with what I should be doing, and just do. Outerfocus is getting the attention it deserves with new conversations and a BloG! with features and photo influences, and we are enjoying asking photographers, “What’s in yer bag?” over on the OF Youtube channel. Whe’re also just starting to get some ideas together for an Outerfocus Live! Freedom Party - with a live recording, an exhibition of your photography and the usual pizza and beer. More details on this coming soon.
This week we have doozy. I recently recorded a conversation with the very wonderful, Norma I. Quintana. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Still on lockdown-ish and enjoying getting back to recording conversations. It’s surprising easy to pin people down when they have to stay home!
This time we talk with, Czesław Siegieda (Jan) about his excellent new book - Polska Britannica. Jan tells us about the history of Polish immigrants in the UK, and his double life of a British school boy and Polish Catholic living in a Resettlement Camp in Burton on the Wolds, Leicestershire.

Czesław Siegieda, born the son of Polish immigrants to England in Leicestershire in 1954, showed an interest in photography from an early age. From his teens he photographed the Polish community he grew up in, moving through fêtes and funerals with an ease only available to..........

Happy Friday!
Welcome to March’s instalment of Outerfocus to sooth your coronavirus blues. Today we welcome the very wonderful, Reuben Radding, a photographer and musician living in Brooklyn, NY.
© Reuben Radding
I’ve been internet friends with Reuben for some time now and met him while in NY a couple of weeks back. During our short conversation I realised that he had an interesting, and somewhat familiar, understanding of photography and the photographic process - Something that I think we are all trying to understand in our own way - and proposed we record a conversation.
There were some quality issues and delay during the recording but I don’t think this takes away from the conversation and ideas raised. It took me a lot longer to edit this one so hang in there, it’s worth it!
