Our guest this week is London-based photographer, Matt Stuart. Best known as a “street photographer,” (or “photographer” which is the preferred term), Matt told us how his former life as a skater and working in a call centre prepared him for a career in photography. 

We didn’t spend much time discussing Berenice Abbott, - or Walker Evans, or Helen Levitt or Robert Frank - but take a look at her work which spanned portraiture of avant-garde artists, the modernising spaces of New York City, to representations of scientific concepts.

Our guest this week is Portuguese wedding photographer, Pedro Vilela. We discuss his short-lived photojournalism career, his move to weddings, and how street photography is the best training for his approach to shooting weddings.

Pedro joins us on our look back at the history of photography which focuses on Paul Strand. Strand's work spanned many genres, including film, and a majority of the twentieth century. From social documentary to abstract cityscapes, Strand influenced the acceptance of photography as more than just a tool for representation of objective reality.

Fadi is Lebanese photographer who, at the moment, is road tripping across the US visiting all towns called Lebanon. For a second time. Episode 27. I can’t quite believe we’ve been jabbering away for so long. Are you not sick of us yet?

This milestone episode (every episode is a milestone, for like, a metaphorical mile or something) we are joined by World Champion skate boarder, Ed Templeton. 

Ed is a pro skateboarder, photographer, designer, painter, skateboard company (Toy Machine) owner and all round nice guy. Among many other things.

We were delighted that he gave us his time and chatted for a good two hours, and we could have gone way longer. 

The conversation started going as soon as the record button went down, so I’ve pretty much left this episode uncut. I’ve chopped a couple of bits that I didn’t think were relevant, due to time and file size constraints, but this is how it went down.

Welcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!

We are back with a bang this week with South African born photojournalist and portrait photographer, Jillian Edelstein. After graduating from The University of Cape Town, Jillian studied photojournalism and has a large, and very impressive, body of work including projects such as Truth and Lies and Instantåneos de Portugal, and multiple worldwide campaigns. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, Vogue and Time and Jillian has also won a plethora of awards. We find out what Jillian’s first introductions to photography were, as well as photos of her own, and others, that have had an impact on her process. We also find out more about her career, growing up in South Africa, and what she has coming up.

Throughout our chat with Jillian we refer to the work and life of Ansel Adams. Born in 1902 Ansel Adams was an environmentalist and landscape photographer from the US. Developer of the Zone System along with Fred Archer, we take a look at some of his work, touch on his relationship with the environment and achievements in life.

Welcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!

Joining us on our 25th episode this week, we speak with international award winning British wedding and street photographer (and all round nice guy), Ross Harvey. Ahead of his impending Milan visit, we hear what Ross has been up to lately, including his recent role as Nikon Ambassador. We also hear a little about how Ross got started and how he went from graphic designer to progressing organically into shooting weddings, as well as what he does besides photography. Also up for discussion this week are Instagram, what motive others have for shooting, and outsourcing post-production.

Continuing the discussion on motives, we look this week at the life and work of Margaret Bourke-White one the first female war photographers. Looking at her iconic body of work, we talk about the obvious passion she had for photography, and her compassion for the situation and subjects. Born in 1904 in New York Margaret had photographed many difficult and hard times around the world, including World War 2, where she was the first female to be allowed to work in combat zones. We discuss this part of her life, as well her time in Pakistan, and some of her iconic images such as those including Stalin, Gandhi and more.

“A camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera” Dorothea Lange 

Welcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!

Joining us after a 2 minute photoshoot earlier in the day, we are pleased to be speaking this week with, Gonçalo Delgado. Growing up with a Father who was a photographer and his Mother a Painter, it’s not surprising Gonçalo embarked on a career as a photojournalist in 2006. Working for several agencies and undertaking a plethora of projects Gonçalo has had his work published around the world in publications such as La Republica, The Telegraph, The Wall Street Journal and many more.

We waste no time in discussing what Gonçalo has been working on recently and what his plans for the future are, including a project surrounding a national park in Portugal. We also talk about the impact camera equipment has on the progression of our photography, as well as some of Gonçalo’s favourite photography books. Ian also gives us an insight into what he has coming up soon.

History of photography for this weeks episode focuses on Dorothea Lange. Born in 1895 Dorothea was a photojournalist and documentary photographer from America, who was well known for humanising the consequences of the Great Depression. We look back at Lange’s education at Columbia University, where she was taught by Clarence H. White, a founding member of the Photo Secession movement and US photographer; and discuss her importance, work and more.

Well-known and respected for her work both in the studio and on location, Gina has photographed many high profile people in both the fashion and entertainment world including Danni Minogue. Born in 1849, Jacob is known for being a Danish-American social documentary photographer who used his skills in journalism and photography to help the poorer population of New York.
