Mary Ellen Gabias is President of the Canadian Federation of the Blind (CFB). On this week’s episode, we speak with her about her years before coming to Canada to lead advocacy efforts for other blind people like her, about her early time working in a sheltered workshop and then going on to create programs for adults who’ve gone blind later in life, and some of the differences she has seen between the way we Canadians advocate and the way the US does it. Mary Ellen’s desire to see things like employment opportunities improve, human rights cases improve the lives of blind people, for a more independent future, always staying true to the CFB’s philosophies that believe blind people, blind Canadians can live the lives we want. Blindness doesn’t have to be that thing to hold us back.
