Outside the Studio presents an epic conversation with Michelle Tea about her latest book, 'Modern Magic,' exploring the themes of witchcraft, tarot, and personal rituals. We discuss the intersection of tarot and witchcraft, the importance of embracing the unknown in spirituality, and the significance of setting up rituals and altars. In this engaging conversation, Michelle and Tessa explore the intersections of spirituality, creativity, and personal growth. They discuss the influence of 12-step traditions on spiritual practices, the syncretism found in various religious practices, and the importance of creating a sacred space for writing. Michelle shares her journey of embracing her creative livelihood, the challenges of overcoming creative blocks, and the significance of betting on oneself despite fears and uncertainties. The conversation emphasizes the power of rituals, both in magic and writing, and encourages listeners to find their own paths in life.
Three reasons to listen to the whole podcast:
1. Rituals can be personalized and should resonate with the individual, for example setting up an altar can include representation of the 4 elements; earth, air, water, fire.
2. Spell work can start with simple practices like meditation and intention setting and maintaining personal practices is essential, especially in relationships.
3. Learn how to overcome creative blocks using magical practices and how embracing fear is essential in pursuing a creative livelihood.

This month on Outside the Studio, we welcome David Benedicktus RN/BSN (retired). David has a 40-year career as a mental health professional working in a variety of mental health settings and focusing on system integration, and patient education projects.
In retirement he became a founding member of Complementary Medicine Practitioners of PNW. He organized wellness health promotion talks for the City of Vancouver WA, the local library system and patient support groups. He also became an instructor at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, for ten years lecturing on the neuroscience of trauma and the relationship between trauma and adaptive lifestyle choices which can lead to chronic disease and addictions. He teaches courses on the Neuroscience of Healing and Resiliency, Preventing Cognitive Decline as You Age, Cannabis and Your Health and Psychedelic Assisted Therapy.
Leaning on David's life experience and subject matter expertise, today's conversation explores the theme of inequality and the divide between the haves and the have-nots. It begins with Tessa sharing her childhood realization of the difference between those who have safety and those who are in danger due to war, poverty, and mental health issues. Her father, David Benedicktus, discusses his involvement in the civil rights movement and his work with marginalized communities, particularly the homeless. They discuss the importance of empathy and taking action to address social issues. The conversation also touches on the impact of poverty, and the role of neuroscience in understanding human behavior.
Key Takeaways:
1.The divide between the haves and the have-nots is a significant issue that affects society. Empathy and understanding are crucial in addressing social issues and helping marginalized communities.
2. Poverty and homelessness are complex problems that require structural support and resources. Neuroscience can help us understand the factors that contribute to human behavior and the need for compassion. Cultivating compassion and empathy is essential for addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
3. Trauma plays a significant role in shaping individuals and communities, and trauma-informed approaches are crucial for providing effective support. Providing resources such as mental health services and affordable housing can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.

They also address the question of whether it's okay to use yoga nidra to fall asleep and how to handle snoring during a yoga nidra practice. The Content of Episode 128 of Outside The Studio:
In this conversation, our favorite repeat guest Jill Rose is back on Outside the Studio to discuss the challenges of technology and the lack of human connection in the digital age. We explore the fear of change and the pressure to strive and achieve in society. Jill shares her insights as a life coach, emphasizing the importance of listening to our inner voice and taking small, gentle steps towards change. We also touch on Tessa's recent surgery and the lessons she learned about self-care and the need for support. Women's health, particularly menopause and reproductive health, is underrepresented and not taken seriously. The conversation around these topics needs to be more open and normalized. Painful periods and PMS symptoms are not normal and should be addressed. There is a lack of research and funding for women's healthcare, especially menopause. Hormone replacement therapy can help with menopausal symptoms but may come with side effects. Embracing the aging process and loving oneself throughout the journey is important.
Key Takeaways:
1. The fear of change and the pressure to achieve can hold us back from making necessary changes in our lives.
2. Listening to our inner voice and taking small, gentle steps can lead us in the right direction.
3. Embracing the aging process and loving oneself throughout the journey is important.

Key Takeaways
1. Be safe. More than anything, do your own homework and research. Don't listen to a podcast of a guy talking about mushrooms and think you know what's up. Talk to experts, connect with local foragers and know exactly what you are growing, foraging and consuming. Use precise scales for weighing, never eyeball doses. Make sure your scale is on the correct setting (grams, not ounces!). Never risk buying street sourced mushrooms or substances. In Portland, Oregon specifically (and many, many other cities), nearly all street drugs are laced with fentanyl, including street marijuana, so know exactly where your purchased product has been. Misinformation surrounding psilocybin mushrooms is widespread, so be careful.
2. Magic mushrooms, psilocybin and other related hallucinogens, are not for everyone. Got a history of mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder? Not a good idea to start taking them recreationally as there's a high possibility of instability. But, can psilocybin be positive for a vast majority of people? Most likely, but it's up to the individual if they find that it's right for them.
3. Cultivating mushrooms from home is not only the safest option since you know exactly what your mushrooms have come from, but the process is relatively simple and fun, too. Depending upon your state's laws, growing psilocybin mushrooms may also be an option. Matt offers classes and kits on growing mushrooms in Portland, Oregon, but you can reach out to your local mushroom experts on how to get started on your new hobby.
4. Whether it's a full dose or microdose of psilocybin, you may encounter different potencies of mushrooms. This is because each mushroom naturally varies in potency, but how do we get a more consistent dose? Grind your collection of mushrooms together before weighing your dose so as to average the strength, ensuring a much more even playing field for your experience.
Matt's Nut Butter Recipe
Ingredients:1 Cup of raw cashews
1 Cup of raw pecans
1/2 Cup of raw walnuts
Spread the nut out on a cookie sheet, and bake in an over for 12 minutes at 325 degrees F. Give a stir at about the six minute mark.
Pull the nuts out of the over, and allow them to cool down for at least fifteen minutes.
Pour the nuts into a food processor, and then add the following two ingredients:
1/2 tsp of salt
2 TBS of avocado oil
'Pulse' the food processor - to initially break up the nuts - and then go into 'Continuous' mode with the food processor. After about twenty seconds or so, use a spatula to scrape down the sides, and then go back into 'Continuous' mode for about another twenty seconds. Again, scrape down the sides.
Now, just hold down that "Continuous" button, and let the nut mixture grind and chop and swirl. After about another twenty to thirty seconds, it will start getting all creamy, oily, smooth. Continue to hold down the button until everything is finally chopped and the nut mixture looks like nut butter.
