The desert monks of the 3rd century were surprised by a certain apathy or melancholy that seemed to overcome some of their brothers. They called it Acedia. It wasn't depression but manifested itself with spiritual indifference, a soul stupor, dullness, and lethargy. They no longer marveled at the sacrifice of Jesus.
