Please note, this interview was recorded on June 13th, 2023, before the Sag/Aftra strike. This Friday see the release of The Adults, the new film starring Michael Cera, Sophia Lillis, and Hannah Gross as a group of siblings who are forced to come to terms with some of their issues they never got past from their youth. We caught the film this past June when the film was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. We had the pleasure of talking to both Michal and Sophia about the film. Tune in next week to hear our discussion with Sophia, but for now, enjoy our chat with Michael about The Adults, Youth in Revolt, some animated Scott Pilgrim, Music, and just being a person in this world.
Where do we even start!? Bank robberies, Children's parties, Tasks, Ghosts, and Denzel--that just scratches the surface of what we are talking about with the one and only, Kiell Smith-Bynoe. From his role as Mike in the original BBC version of Ghosts (the character of Jay is his counterpart in the American version) to his recent stint as a contestant on series 15 of Taskmaster, Kiell shows no signs of slowing down his killer career.
He recentley revived his stage show, String V. Spitta while he and writing/performing partner Ed MacArthur work on a TV show based on their hit play. With the ball rolling, the show will have a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Fest. Kiell joined us to talk about the show, as well as his Overdue Rental, Spike Lee's 2006--Inside Man. Click play to listen to this wonderful chat and click the following link to get your tickets for String V Spitta during its EdFringe run from August 18th to the 26th. TICKETS!
What a perfect storm of consequences. The legendary film maker Steve James is back with a new documentary, A Compassionate Spy. And the timing couldn't be more perfect as its subject was part of that little thing called The Manhattan Project. You know, you might have been inundated with the subject with it being the main focus of a little movie called Barbie...I mean Oppenheimer! We were lucky enough to have some time to talk with Steve about his new documentary as well as his cornerstone revolutionary doc, Hoop Dreams. Tune in for a great one here! A Compassionate Spy is in theaters and on VOD this Friday, August 4th.
The Edinburgh Fringe Fest is quickly approaching. That means a lot of great new comedy will coming out of the historic festival and stand-up Dane Baptiste is returning with his new show, Bapsquire. Dane is a one of kind performer and we were blessed to have him join us to talk about his comedy as well as his Overdue Rental choice, 1994's, The Crow. Please join us for this wonderful and insightful conversation. And don't forget to pick up your tickets to see Bapsquire at this year's Fringe by clicking on the following link: Bapsquire Tickets Performances will run from August 14th to the 27th.
Who needs a good laugh? Well, you're lucky as we have comedian Huge Davies joining us for this episode. Huge's 2019 Edinburgh nominated show The Carpark will be available to stream starting June 20th on the 800 Pound Gorilla platform. Huge joined us to talk all about his approach to performing, building his special keyboard presentation system, and of course, his Overdue Rental choice; Alita: Battle Angel. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this wonderful conversation.
Dennis Haysbert is someone everyone is familiar with, even if they don't know it. Maybe you know him as Pedro Cerrano from Major League. Maybe you're a 24 fan and know him as President David Palmer. Or maybe you just know him as The Allstate insurance man. The fact of the matter is, the man has had one hell of a storied career and is so much more than the roles people may associate him with. He can currently be seen as Clarence C. Baker in the Hulu/Disney+ picture, Flamin' Hot. The film chronicles the man behind the special Frito/Lay snack and can be seen by all starting this Friday, June 9th. While we had Dennis with us to talk about the movie, we also took the chance to talk to him about the indie neo-noir he starred in from 1993, Suture. Strap in for a good one folks!
The 2023 Harlem Film Festival is kicking off this weekend in New York City and we were lucky enough to be joined by Doug E. Doug to talk about his new film, In the Weeds, which premieres this Friday the 19th at the fest. Doug stars in, co-directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the film and will be on hand with his co-creator and cast members for a Q&A after the screening. While Doug was with us, we just had to talk about the 1992 Kid 'N Play comedy Class Act which he brilliant co-starred in. After you listen to our conversation with Doug, make sure to click the following link to get your tickets for the In the Weeds premiere: https://harlemfilmfestival2023.eventive.org/schedule/in-the-weeds-preceded-by-i-held-him-645002af1db7ec00822dd512
In the long span of film history there have always been releases that were deemed controversial upon their release. Catherine Hardwicke's directorial debut, Thirteen, was definitely one of those films that was met with a lot of backlash thinking it was glamourizing aspects of teenage life that it certainly wasn't. You couldn't turn a corner at the time of its release without hearing the buzz around the movie, whether is was for or against it. We had the opportunity to revisit the film with Catherine whilst also talking about her new comedy, Mafia Mamma, which stars Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. Mafia Mamma is out in theaters now starting Friday, April 14th.
Though the free living Outer Worlds and the titular Alphaville of the 1965 Jean-Luc Goddard classic we are talking about this week seemingly exists on same physical planes as each other, it seems ultra fitting that this week's guest, comedian Alasdair Beckett-King, is with us to discuss his new tour; The Interdimensional ABK. Alasdair has some time to come and visit us to talk about the new tour, his YouTube shorts, Panel Shows, all before we dove right into the mysterious, Alphaville. The Interdimensional ABK kicks its run off this Friday, April 7th in Brighton and finished up with two shows in June in Leicester Square. Alasdair will be taking the show all over the UK and Ireland. If you haven't secured your spot yet for a date in your area, click here to get your tickets. If you also want to catch up on his YouTube videos, you can do so, here.
Another true legend joins us as this week we have Cheech Marin joining us. Cheech can be seen in the new Bobby Farrelly film, Champions, which opens March 10th in theaters. But we just had to talk about Cheech's directorial debut, Born in East L.A., while we had him with us. Another lovely chat with an absolute lovely person, please enjoy!
