Sometimes what stops churches from being more welcoming is our way of thinking. People need to be able to come as they are, with all their problems and sin included, so that the finished work of Jesus Christ can cleanse them. Whether you believe it or not, that is what happened to you; the Lord found you, caught you, and then cleaned you.
