Today, Terry Liggins is not only a renowned athlete but also a community leader and a founding member of the SD Black Chamber of Commerce. Through initiatives like the Hurdle Life Coaching Foundation, he continues to make a profound impact, empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

Miranda is a dedicated member of the Sioux Falls community and a candidate for City Council in the Northeast district. Miranda's upbringing instilled in her the values of hard work and the importance of recognizing the individuals behind that hard work. 

 Having given her all to the community, Miranda believes there is still more she can offer. Drawing from her experiences as a former Softball player at The University of Sioux Falls, she understands that true change requires a collective effort, starting with one person leading by example.

 This also means holding core values that leaders are often instilled with during their upbringing including honesty, respect, kindness, responsibility, perseverance, empathy, and integrity. These will help shape individuals into well-rounded and compassionate members of society. 

 While Miranda's aspirations for city council are commendable, this episode focuses on her personal journey - the challenges she has faced, the victories she has achieved, and the constant strive for self-improvement and positivity.

Keyen Lage is a former NFL athlete who has not only transformed his own life but now helps other change their lives at an extremely high level.  

Raised in Sioux Falls, SD, Keyen gained recognition as the face of the high school football community at Washington High School. His remarkable football skills and work ethic led him to the collegiate level at The University of South Dakota, where he continued to excel. Eventually, Keyen landed the opportunity to play for the Kansas City Chiefs but while performing a routine physical before officially signing with the team, this dream came to a screeching halt due to an injury received college. 

 However, Keyen’s journey didn’t stop there. He felt a calling to have a greater impact on people’s lives. This led him to become a success coach, specializing in helping professional athletes, CEOs, social media influencers, and serial entrepreneurs overcome mental, emotional, and physical barriers. Known in many communities as “The Genie” Keyen’s unique mindset and coaching approach has helped individuals unlock their true potential and become the best versions of themselves. 

 Keyen brings energy and valuable insights to every community he is a part of, just like the Overstepping Poverty Podcast, he aims to change mindsets and make a difference one person at a time. This weeks special guest is John Milk. His story is truly remarkable. Once a product of his environment, he has experienced firsthand how the people and circumstances around you can shape your life. Growing up, John found himself entangled in trouble and became caught in a cycle with the correctional system.

However, John’s story is one of transformation. It is a testament to the power of changing your environment and mindset. Against all odds, John made a complete turnaround in his life. He dedicated himself to making a positive impact on his community, particularly through teaching children the importance of creativity. Together with his business partner, John co-owns a venture called “Red Resilience,” which to us focuses on promoting resilience and positive change.

John’s journey showcases the incredible potential for personal growth and resilience in efforts to become better than you were yesterday. It serves as a powerful reminder that second chances can lead to profound transformations and the ability to inspire others. John’s story is authentic, inspiring, and entirely unique. It demonstrates that it is not the system that changes the person, but rather the person who has the power to change the system

This weeks special guest is Kathy Caldwell! She has an impressive background as a previous presiding judge on the South Dakota second judicial court. Kathy’s story is one of strategy, determination, and relentless efforts in achieving her goals of becoming a lawyer & Judge to change the system from within.

Her journey towards becoming a lawyer/Judge included serving in the Peace Corps and traveling to Ethiopia. Along the way, Kathy encountered a rare and dangerous experience of being bitten by a green mamba snake, but miraculously survived the snake bite.

Despite facing obstacles, Kathy was determined to make a difference in the world to become one of the first female judges. She defied expectations that judges had to be men and Republicans, two things she was not. This did not deter her from pursuing her dreams.

Among her many accomplishments, Kathy became the second woman to sit on the Supreme Court. One of her most significant contributions was approving the program “Drug Court,” which aimed to provide treatment to substance-abusing offenders while minimizing the use of incarceration.

Kathy serves as a role model to many women and exemplifies the belief that anything is achievable with hard work. Her episode on the Overstepping Poverty Podcast is truly remarkable and not to be missed.

Natacha Artz was born and raised in Pierre, South Dakota, Natacha has faced numerous challenges and obstacles throughout her life. Despite these hardships, she has managed to overcome them and achieve remarkable accomplishments.

One of Natacha's challenges she encountered was becoming a mother at a young age. This presented her with the responsibility of balancing the demands of motherhood while also pursuing life as a young adult grasping to be free of responsibilities.

Being a single mother added an additional layer of complexity to Natacha's journey. Raising her child with the help of family, required immense strength and resilience. Despite the difficulties, Natacha did not give up. She persevered through the trials and errors of life, determined to create a better future for herself and her child.

Though teen pregnancy created hardship, it was one of Natcha’s significant achievements. Instead of letting this define her, she used it as a catalyst to unleash her true grit and determination to become a better version of herself. Natacha defied all odds and statistics that stood in her way, proving that with perseverance and a strong will, anything is possible!

Throughout her journey, Natacha also experienced the internal struggle of finding her true self. This required a lot of introspection and personal growth. Natacha worked diligently to discover her passions, strengths, and purpose, ultimately transforming herself into the empowered individual she is today.

Today, Natacha is a successful insurance agent at Fischer, Rounds & Associates Inc. in Rapid City, South Dakota. She has found her niche as a Truck Account Executive and is thriving in her career. Natacha's hard work and dedication have paid off, and success follows her in every direction.

Natacha's story is one of growth, resilience, and perseverance. It serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and grit, one can overcome any challenge and achieve great things in life. Her detailed narrative is an inspiration that should not be missed.

Maleah is the founder of the Smart City Women's Congress, an organization that empowers women and fosters connections among younger women while educating them about their cities. Their mission is to identify real concerns of their generation and work towards achievable solutions!

Maleah has achieved remarkable things in a relatively short period of time. She credits her strong work ethic and determination to both of her parents, but finds love in the works that she does from her father! But, both have been great role models for her. Whether she is working as a life coach, influencing others, or creating innovative projects, Maleah is a true pillar of the community. She brings her passion from Kansas City, Missouri to Sioux Falls, and we are excited to welcome her energy.

As a Sociology and Communications major at Augustana University, Maleah has taken on various leadership roles, cultivated relationships and fostered friendships. In this episode, she will not only motivate and inspire you, but also provide a unique perspective on the young talent and entrepreneurial mindset she brings to our community. Her sights and goals are aimed high, and she is committed to making a positive impact.

One of Tyra's notable contributions is her leadership of the Journey Scholars program. This program is specifically designed to support first-year students of color as they navigate the challenges of a historically white institution. Through her guidance and mentorship, Tyra ensures that these students have the necessary resources and support to succeed.

But Tyra's dedication to the community extends beyond her role at Augustana University. She welcomes everyone with open arms and actively engages in various activities to give back.
