This is definitely not a song about the Ukraine, now. Nope. It’s just a History Song about the Olden Days of the Czars, when Russia used to draft men into the military to fight and die in pointless foreign wars, only to serve as a distraction from the incompetence and corruption of the regime at home. One might note that these losing wars ultimately led to the end of the Czars. Historically speaking.
The story of the Russian 2nd Pacific Fleet in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 is one of epic and brutally tragicomic foolishness, a military adventure that was set up to fail from the beginning, by the delusions of the Czar. Which is totally not like now.
I asked Michael Wex to write a song in Yiddish about these historical and not current events just for no reason and not because anyone right now today is so much like Nicholas II in his callous and deluded adventurism.
Instead of writing one song, he wrote six!
So now we have a brilliant Yiddish operetta song cycle, ready for production.
I hope you enjoy this new historical song curiosity with absolutely no connection to current events so there’s absolutely no reason for anyone to throw any accordion players out the window.
The whole world is just a ship,
The sun rises in St. Petersburg
“A war, your majesty, a victorious war,
“Waging war on a weak little enemy,
The whole world is just a ship,
The Czar nods his assent––
“Prepare an invincible fleet
They take Jews from the villages
War, war,
The whole world is just a ship,
