I want you to imagine this. You are on vacation. It's the middle of the night. And you are lying there wide awake, drafting an email in your head to a manager who is fast asleep. You did everything right. You bought the second phone. You left the laptop at home. And you are still here at 2 a.m., writing a message you will not send, in a bed you paid good money to relax in.

The thing that no productivity hack will tell you is that the problem was never your devices. Two phones cannot fix a brain that never learned how to stop. Technology is not the fix. It never was.

I want to talk about your zone of genius, and why it was never a job title.

Here's the trap I see so many accomplished people fall into. They decide their zone of genius lives inside a job. And the moment they do that, their entire happiness and fulfillment becomes a job too. Their sense of whether they're okay rises and falls with their work. That is a really fragile way to live.

Because here's the truth. Your zone of genius isn't a role. It's a way you show up in the world. It's the thing you do so naturally you barely notice it. And once you see it that way, the question changes. It stops being "what role do I want," and it becomes "what's the work only I can do," and then, "where is that valuable?"
