From the shock of the pandemic to war in Ukraine, steeply rising prices and some alarmingly wobbly banks: it can feel as if the world right now is lurching from crisis to crisis, and governments and businesses are running to catch up.
In truth, though, no change happens in isolation, nor is it spontaneous. All these crises are linked, and underlying them is a big picture of five mega-trends that are shaping our long-term future on the planet: tech and life science, conflict, demographics, and global migration, with the combined challenges of environmental degradation, declining biodiversity, and climate change at the very centre. These issues have to be addressed at the same time and from multiple different perspectives. But how can this be done against a background of competing priorities and balancing the needs of individuals, organisations, and countries?
MP and former investment banker, the Rt Hon Sajid Javid has been at the sharp end of tackling some of these challenges during a remarkable political career that includes spells as Secretary of State for Culture, Digital, Media & Sport; Secretary of State for Business; Secretary of State for Housing and Local Government; Home Secretary; Chancellor of the Exchequer; and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Join Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz in conversation with our Director of Journalism Programmes Mitali Mukherjee for a discussion that will include expert contributions from an international audience of working journalists.
Professor Stiglitz was Chief Economist at the World Bank and the founder of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue. He is a strong advocate for transparency and accountability in the financial sector, and a vocal critic of financial journalism that contributes to the perpetuation of financial bubbles and crises.
Following Joseph’s presentation, leading academic Amir Amel-Zadeh, Associate Professor of Accounting at Saïd Business School, will be explaining how the role and purpose of modern companies has been redefined, with an ever growing need to understand and demonstrate how they create (and destroy) value beyond financials. In a 30-minute lecture, he will be highlighting the work of the School’s Rethinking Performance Initiative which has established a global centre of bold discussions, contemporary thought and innovative ideas on how to operationalise purpose through holistic performance measures and valuation. Amir’s work has been cited across the business press, including the Financial Times, and in a variety of policy documents by the EU, Bank of International Settlements, IMF and the World Economic Forum.

The Oxford Business Forum Africa, hosted by the Oxford Africa Business Alliance on 10 March 2023.

Actions to address climate change raise particular challenges for social justice, and for the future of jobs in Africa. Even though there will be opportunities for generation of new green jobs, people working in industry and/or living in regions and communities where dependence on fossil fuel is high and where opportunities for economic diversification are limited are likely to see job losses. With the right choices and measures, African countries can manage the trade-offs and achieve both their development and social objectives to make sure the process of greening African economies doesn’t worsen existing inequalities.
