For this episode, I wanted to do something different.

If you’ve been riding with me through my podcast journey, you've noticed how it has changed. I’ve started incorporating, affirmations, breathing exercises, and questions that provoke thought and reflection. 

Everything I learned from my Therapy sessions, I try my best to incorporate it in my daily life. I’ve been on this path of healing for a couple of years now, and you have also heard about the things that I have trouble with, like living with Bipolar 2, and how it affects my daily life. My traumas and my search for purpose.

This is episode is about my journey in my path to live with purpose.

Manny Fernandez originally from Lima, Peru is a dancer, director, choreographer, and activist who researches, illustrates and creates Afro- Peruvian art. He has worked with many dance companies such as Lakai Dance Theater, Benkadi Drum and Dance and Ballet Russes. He has done most of his training in Boston at the Roxbury center for performing arts, The Dance Complex and has traveled to Peru to train in Afro-Peruvian dance. Being involved in the diaspora dance community for 10 years has inspired him to bring more awareness of Afro-Peruvian culture. He currently works with an eclectic group of artists and educators dedicated to performing, teaching and researching Afro-Peruvian dance and musical forms

This week, our guest is Nathalie Flores of Peruvians of USA Podcast .

Join us on this heart to heart about identity and the importance of Peruvian Representation.

Nathalie launched the Peruvians of USA podcast on July 28, 2020 with the goal to share the diversity of the Peruvian immigrant experience in the U.S., and explore what it means to be Peruvian in another country. She wants the podcast to serve as a collection of memories - as many of us are first-generation immigrants. Episodes are released every other week and the interviews are conducted in español, English, or Spanglish. The stories shared are deeply personal and each gives a new meaning to what it means to be a Peruvian immigrant. Nathalie hopes the audience listens with an open mind and heart. Ultimately, these stories build a connection between Peruvians in the U.S., Peruvians in Peru, and immigrants around the world.

This week, we’re going to be doing things a little different.

A while back, I had a discussion with my mom about our own immigration story and what led us to leave everything and everyone behind for a better life.

Initially, this was supposed to be put out last year, but the more I listened to the recording, the More overprotective I became, not just of my mom but of my country and my story as well. Which made me think about our own generational traumas, and how it affects the way we speak about our stories.

Janice Llamoca is an award-winning journalist and podcast producer at VICE News. During her time as a radio producer, she has done stories about history, language access, and culture, and humanizes her stories with compelling voices from communities of color. Her work has been featured in NPR’s Latino USA, The New York Times, NPR’s Code Switch, LA Weekly, Remezcla and more. As a proud Peruvian American, Janice (in her spare time) attempts to convert the English-speaking world to pronounce “l-l-a-m-a” as “Yama” and not “Lama.” Because no one says “tortiLa.”

Last week’s Episode was all about my struggles living with Bipolar 2 disorder.

On this week’s episode, I’ll be busting all the myths and misconceptions about Bipolar disorder. The reason I’m so passionate talking about this subject is because of the negativity that surrounds mental health disorder. What the media displays, the music we listen to, the movies we watch, the conversations we have. We’re so quick to call someone crazy and bipolar when they don't display the characteristics society has placed on us. We take these mental disorders and use them to belittle and insult. This is why it took me so long to talk about it and how it affects my way of life. But I’m not scared anymore.

This week's episode is super personal to me. 

Join me as I have this heart to heart talk with myself while at the sametime try to debunk a whole bunch of myths and misconceptions about people living with Bipolar Disorder. 

Bipolar disorder is a neurobiological brain disorder that affects approximately 2.3 million Americans today, or almost 1 percent of the population. Although bipolar disorder usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood, it can sometimes start in early childhood or as late as age 40 or 50. Bipolar II is similar to Bipolar I disorder, with moods cycling between high and low over time. However, in bipolar II disorder, the "up" moods never reach full-blown mania. The less-intense elevated moods in bipolar II disorder are called hypomanic episodes, or hypomania. It is not as extreme as a manic period. A person affected by bipolar II disorder has had at least one hypomanic episode in his or her life. Most people with bipolar II disorder suffer more often from episodes of depression. This is where the term "manic depression" comes from.

Rivera’s critically acclaimed debut novel Juliet Takes a Breath was called “f*cking outstanding” by Roxane Gay and was re-published in September 2019 by Penguin Random House. Currently, Gabby is the writer and creator of b.b. free, a new original comic series with BOOM! Studios. When not writing, Gabby speaks on her experiences as a queer Puerto Rican from the Bronx, an LGBTQ youth advocate, and the importance of prioritizing joy in QTPOC communities at events across the country. Gabby makes magic on both coasts, currently residing in California. She writes for all the sweet baby queers, and her mom.
