The number of critically imperiled tiny fish, known as the Arkansas Darter, is increasing at Wilson Springs Preserve in Fayetteville, a 121-acre wet prairie recently restored by Northwest Arkansas Land Trust, which opened to the public last September.

Last week, Washington County Sheriff Tim Helder announced the suspension of the work release program at the detention center, which allowed inmates to do work in the community through city and county governments and various nonprofits. While Helder says the decision may be unpopular, he needs short-term solutions to manage the overcrowding at the jail.

The City of Fayetteville is now accepting compostable food waste from residents as part of its goal to divert at least 40 percent of all waste sent to the landfill by 2027. Composting is essential to meeting that goal because food waste makes up 18 percent of the total waste going to the landfill.
