Governor Asa Hutchinson has signed an emergency proclamation regarding the underground fire that has burned in a Bella Vista landfill for the last five months. That's after the governor toured the so-called stump dump last week. The fire is believed to have started in late July, but now the state has committed nearly $1 million to determine the best way to put it out.

Officials with Mount Sequoyah have explored ways to better connect the nonprofit to Fayetteville and northwest Arkansas. One of the projects developed in the two-and-a-half years since the organization became independent is Creative Spaces. The project is intended to heighten community engagement and bring arts residencies to Mount Sequoyah.

In the new year, the 15-member Washington County Quorum Court is welcoming eight Republicans and seven Democrat justices of the peace. All seven of the Democrats are women, which means nine of the justices are women. The justices of the peace were sworn in Wednesday by Washington County Circuit Judge Joanna Taylor.
