  • I Was an EMT Until I Couldn't Take It Anymore
I became an EMT because I was seeking redemption. I did not get it. I worked nights for years, and I saw the worst of humanity on a regular basis.I would never sleep on the night shift, just sit by the radio with a book listening for "A-48 come in." That was the call sign of my truck. You never knew what you were going to get. It could be anything from a machete attack to rape to child abuse to a shooting to an overdose.

  • Unapologetic: Healing With the Purifying Power of Tattoo Pain
The tattoo shop is hard to find. If you try Google Maps, you won't unearth much. Once you do obtain the address (via Instagram Direct), you may still have trouble locating it - the building's exterior blends into the monochromatic ones surrounding it. When you finally enter, you'll be greeted by a loud buzz. And there, inside Secret Fire Tattoo, you'll find Hira Lupe and her wife, Laura, working. The influence of horror movies, Japanese comic books and Italian art are apparent in Lupe's work.

  • Try Not to Land in Purgatory or Jail at This Abandoned Biblical Park
You first see the 65-foot stainless steel cross from the highway, peeking out between the "Holy Land, U.S.A." sign and the Gothic spires of St. Anne's Church. Winding uphill, stop at the wooden gate with the brick facade to read a sign warning you that there's "no trespassing, violators will be prosecuted" and that the property is under video surveillance.

  • Would You Sacrifice Car and Coffee to Retire in 10 Years?

The marshmallow experiment is a famous lesson in delayed gratification. A Stanford University psychologist gave children a choice: one reward now, or two rewards if they waited about 15 minutes. Some children took the marshmallow. Others waited, but it wasn’t easy.

  • You'll Play These Games Because They're Impossible
All I was trying to do was run. It's not so hard: calves and quads, up and down. A child could do it. But I couldn't, which is the magic of QWOP.Developed in 2008, QWOP is a simple video game. You use the Q, W, O and P keys to control the legs of an Olympic athlete trying to run 100 meters. But it turns out that it's a lot more complicated than that: The controls are wonky and awkward. You'll try to step high and fall back. After several minutes, due to a fall, I go backward.

  • Look Closer: The Next 'Star Wars' Movie?
We've seen the scene before: A lone hero surveys a dusty sand planet. In fact, we've seen it twice, in both Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Is this a preview of the newest installment in the saga? Or could it be what every space nerd has always dreamed of - an actual astronaut landing on a new planet in real life?Turns out, it's a glimpse of the latter. No, we haven't landed on Mars ... yet.

  • The Bookstore Where All Your Favorite Titles Are Signed
The trailer home shopfront in the parking lot of a veterinary office is about as unassuming as you can get in this unassuming suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. Only the posters hint at the literary treasures hidden inside, showing off book titles as sensually as a strip joint showing off neon silhouettes - today, it's the Southern Lady Code, by Helen Ellis, and Bending Toward Justice, by Sen. Doug Jones, that get the main stage. And below each author's photo, in bold letters, the key word: "SIGNING.

  • WNBA Players Make Less Than NBA Refs … So They Get Creative
The debate didn't begin with Liz Cambage, but the MVP runner-up and Dallas Wings center certainly put it more succinctly than anyone had before.Cambage tweetCambage is expected to sit out the 2019 WNBA season, which tips off this month, in part because of her displeasure with the working conditions, as well as her trade request not being fulfilled. People are used to NBA players getting sky-high salaries, but her reference to the men (and women) in stripes was a stunning - yet accurate - point.

  • Unapologetic: Cutting Away at Wig Tradition
If you ever find yourself in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood, you may notice the approximately 40 synagogues and many yeshivas. You'll see bearded men in black coats and modestly dressed women with short brown hair following the traditional appearance called for by the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. What you may not notice, though, is what many women in this community, and in many other Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, are wearing: wigs.

  • Fistfights With My Mother
Getting ready to see a band you want to see - like really want to see - in the early stages of musical enthusiasm is not unlike getting up early on Christmas morning. There's a giddy wildness, approaching hysteria, as the day draws near. You're geeking out to the music of whichever band you're about to see, skimping on stuff you'd ordinarily spend money on so that you have enough for a ticket.
