Zechariah 9 | Greg Opean

The book of Zechariah is rich with prophecy, history, and God’s faithfulness. In chapter 9, we see how God used world leaders—like Alexander the Great—to fulfill His divine plan, just as He had prophesied 200 years in advance. This passage also foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey to bring salvation. Through this chapter, we witness God’s sovereignty over world leaders and history, the prophetic accuracy of Scripture, and the unfolding of Jesus’ first and second coming. It also serves as a powerful encouragement to trust in God’s plan, knowing that even when the world seems out of control, He is at work.

James has been showing us that what we believe, what we have faith in, will show in our actions. In chapter three, he focuses in on our tongues, the words we speak. Words have power—they can build up or tear down, direct or destroy. He challenges us to tame the tongue and use our speech to encourage, bring wisdom, and speak life over others. No one can tame the tongue on their own, but with God’s help, transformation is possible!
