UPDATE! Since the recording of this video, the medical examiner's office ruled Mr. Geraldo Lunas Campos' death a homicide. The Department of Homeland Security originally said his death was due to "medical distress," then said he died while guards were trying to save him from killing himself. Mr. Campos' daughter got a recording of a conversation with staff in the medical examiner's office that they were preparing to rule his death a homicide. It's good she got this recording. The news might look very different today if she hadn't.
Brittany Page discusses the deaths of detainees in detention, including the changing stories and attempts to lie and cover for bad behavior coming from the Department of Homeland Security to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In one single facility in Texas, three detainees have died in 44 days, including Mr. Geraldo Lunas Campos, whose death was just ruled a homicide. Brittany welcomes Dr. Terence Keel, author of "The Coroner's Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence," to help us make sense of these confusing and rapidly shifting stories of brutality in detention.
