  • Summer Replay | 29: Caring Deeply and Dropping Your Ego with Dr. Peter O'Sullivan

This week, on Pain Reframed, Dr. Tim Flynn and Dr. Jeff Moore are joined by Dr. Peter O'Sullivan. Peter is Professor of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at Curtin University, in Perth, Australia. In addition to his teaching and research at Curtin University, he works in clinical practice as a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2005). He is recognized internationally as a leading clinician, researcher and educator in the management of complex musculoskeletal pain disorders.

Tim, Jeff, and Peter discuss being authentic with patients and walking alongside with them in ways the medical industrialized complex doesn't. Peter shares his success story of deeply caring for patients for a long time and being willing to drop his pride and ego when the patient wasn't getting better. It's allowed him to learn, to grow, and to, ultimately, help patients so much more.

Don't forget to save the date: June 8-10, 2018 in Denver, Colorado, the Align Conference will be taking place, focusing on neuropathic (nerve) pain. All of the various concepts of calming the nerves down will be covered at this conference.

  • Summer Replay | 28: We Have Ignored the Pain Psychology of Patients | Dr. Beth Darnall

This week, on Pain Reframed, Dr. Tim Flynn and Dr. Jeff Moore are joined by Dr. Beth Darnall, who is a pain psychologist, clinical scientist, and Clinical Professor at Stanford University. Beth has a focus on pain catastrophizing as well as treating some of the key issues that prevent patients from succeeding with other pain treatments.

Clinically, Beth provides psychological services to patients with catastrophic burn, spinal cord injury or amputation. Her desire to specialize in the management of chronic pain was inspired by her clinical experiences and by her own personal experience with chronic pain. Beth brings a wealth of knowledge to the episode as they discuss some key aspects to managing patients with chronic pain as well as altering systems to maximize positive treatment effects.

  • Summer Replay | 5: Drug Dealer, MD | Dr. Anna Lembke

Welcome back to Pain Reframed! This week, we welcome Dr. Anna Lembke who is the Chief of Addiction Medicine and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. Anna is also the author of the powerful and eye-opening book "Drug Dealer, MD."

Dr. Lembke shares her professional journey and what led her to write "Drug Dealer, MD." The premise behind her book is extremely jaw-dropping and shows a very real perspective to what happens between Doctor and Patient in the medical profession and in terms of the opioid crisis. She reads a passage out of her book and she, Tim, and Jeff discuss just what that looks like and what we, as PT's need to do to fix this pain problem and help our patients!

On the other hand, Anna is not attacking doctors as she believes they are "trapped in the system" and she, therefore, has a great deal of empathy for them. Her desire is to help them to get them out of the bureaucracy in order to solve the problem for patients. This is a fantastic and intriguing episode worth your time!

  • 110. We Believe You | Keith Meldrum

We're excited to have Keith Meldrum on this week's episode of Pain Reframed! He shares his journey with chronic pain, what led him to the biopsychosocial model in particular, and how a simple statement changed the path of his recovery.

A civil engineer by trade, Keith has been living with chronic pain for over 30 years, after a near-fatal car accident in 1986. Years of surgeries eventually ended in being told that his pain was all in his head. Since then, he's taught himself about the biopsychosocial model and began advocating for it. He continues to speak out about the importance of pain science through social media, his blog, and other avenues.

  • 109. The Answers Aren't All in the Brain | Dr. Judy Grisel

We have the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Judy Grisel for a particularly emotional episode of Pain Reframed this week. She shares her personal struggle with addiction, the havoc it wreaked on her life and relationships, and what it was that eventually got through to her and convinced her to get sober. She also discusses how she's helping her own daughter avoid making the same mistakes, using techniques we can all implement, both in our clinics and in our personal lives.

Dr. Judy Grisel is a behavioral neuroscientist whose research focuses on determining root causes of drug addiction. She studies sex differences in the role of stress and endorphins on drug reward and works to identify innate factors that contribute to individual differences in the liability toward addiction.

In addition to being a professor and researcher, Judy is a New York Times bestselling author. Her book, Never Enough, uses her past as an addict to explore the neuroscience behind how drugs work, the changes they cause in the brain, and where we might be able to find the cure to today's addiction epidemic. It's a powerful piece that we recommend for all clinicians who work with current or recovering addicts.

Do you have a question for Judy that you'd like her to answer on another episode of Pain Reframed? Send us a DM on Twitter, post it in the Pain Reframed Facebook group, or email Liz Peppin at [email protected].
