Palestine faces the challenges of the twenty-first century. Conference by Ilan Pappe (ENG)
Casa Árabe is hosting this seminar organized by Amnesty International and the General Union of Palestinian Communities in Europe. It will consist of two round table discussions, with the participation of Ilan Pappé.
Whereas the most recent estimates seem to indicate 43,000 deaths, of which 18,000 are children, a study in the scientific journal The Lancet estimates approximately 186,000 due to the cumulative effects of Israel’s war in Gaza and the lack of accurate data after October 7. In addition to 102,000 people injured and over 10,000 who are missing. More than 53,000 children have been wounded or have become permanently disabled. The UN Committee on Children’s Rights has stated that “Israel has killed more children in Gaza than men and women.”
Within the context of such a critical situation among the Palestinian people due to the war which Israel is waging with full force in Gaza, while also resorting to other methods in the West Bank, it is essential for us to examine not only the events since October 7, 2023, but also the different factors involved in this occupation now lasting over seven decades: this includes both the humanitarian and economic dimensions and the situation among Palestinian prisoners, as well as Zionism’s use as a weapon to further colonization.
The second round table discussion will begin at 7:00 p.m., and its main speaker will be Ilan Pappé, a professor of History at the University of Exeter. He will be discussing the issue of Zionism as a colonial political system and its negative effects on the coexistence between the different ethnic groups living in Palestine and on peace in the Middle East region. He will be accompanied by Ramón García-Catalán Fernández, President of Amnesty International Madrid, and Jamil Mahmoud Abousaada, Director of the General Union of Palestinian Communities in Europe.
