Palliative Care - It's Not Hospice

Palliative Medicine is a newer medical specialty to provide care and symptom management for patients with serious illness. Palliative medicine is not the same as Hospice. There are physicians that are specifically trained for Palliative Medicine and they have had their own exams and certification board since 1997, the American Board Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Patients that have symptoms caused by serious illness can talk with a palliative specialist/team who will help them to optimize their quality of life. Some hospitals and insurance companies provide opportunities for evaluation by a palliative care interdisciplinary medical team to better meet the concerns and needs of patients and families. Allopathic (MD) and Osteopathic (DO) physicians provide the medical care supported by other disciplines (such as primary care and other specialties) to assist with symptom management.
