We live in a world that celebrates aggression, self-promotion, and relentless ambition, and yet the being meek sounds almost countercultural to the point of being offensive. But what we discovered when we dig beneath the surface is that meekness is not the timid, spineless quality our culture assumes it to be. Meekness is strength under control. Jesus himself demonstrated this when he stood before his accusers, fully capable of calling down legions of angels, and chose instead to submit to the Father's plan. True meekness requires courage, conviction, and an unwavering trust that God's purposes are greater than our own comfort or agenda. As we examine our own lives, we are challenged to consider where we have been relying on our own strength, our own timing, and our own plans rather than yielding to the One who holds everything together.

What if the very things we spend our lives trying to avoid are actually the doorways to God's deepest blessings? As we continued our series on The Beatitudes looking at Matthew 5:4, we are told that those who mourn are blessed and shall be comforted. We tend to build entire lifestyles around escaping sorrow and even ignoring it. Yet here we find a God who turns toward the broken, who calls the grieving blessed, and who does not look away from those falling apart. We see three distinct kinds of mourning: the natural grief that comes with loss, the sinful pining that pulls us away from God rather than toward him, and the spiritual mourning over sin that opens the door to genuine transformation. It is this third kind that Jesus has in mind, and it is the kind that changes everything. When we stop concealing our failures and start genuinely grieving over them, something shifts. We draw near to God, and he draws near to us. The comfort that follows is not the world's shallow distraction but a peace that surpasses understanding. This is the kingdom logic that turns our assumptions upside down and invites us into something far deeper than we imagined.

This past Sunday we started a brand new series titled, "The Beatitudes: Living Right-Side up in an Upside-Down World". In this first week, we pondered the question "What does it truly mean to be blessed?" We tend to associate blessing with success, comfort, and achievement which are the visible markers that tell the world things are going well. But in Matthew 5, Jesus opens the Sermon on the Mount by turning that assumption completely upside down. The first Beatitude declares that the poor in spirit are the ones who inherit the kingdom of heaven. Not the accomplished. Not the self-sufficient. Not the ones who have worked hardest to earn God's favor. The ones who arrive with nothing. This is the transformational foundation of the kingdom Jesus came to proclaim, and it challenges every instinct we have about what a life of blessing looks like. We are invited to ask ourselves a difficult but liberating question: are we still clutching the things we think qualify us before God, or have we come to him with open and empty hands? The answer to that question changes everything.
