  • My Arizona Adventure #4: Why the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is the BEST!

Hello friends! Today we’re talking all about the fantastic Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. This Zoo/Botanic Garden/Aquarium/Museum is absolutely one of the best museums on earth. Please let me tell you why…

On top of all the museum stuff, I also want to chat about the opening night of the NAAEE Conference, and my three favourite moments from the evening! In no particular order, they are…

🌸 The incredibly talented ‘Las Azeleas’!

📜 The declaration of ‘Environmental Education Week’ here in Tucson!

🐠 The wisdom imparted by the iconic Julie Packard, founder of the Monterey Bay Aquarium!

I can’t wait to see where the rest of this week takes me. It’s started really, really well!

  • My Arizona Adventure #3: I Fed the Giraffes at Reid Park Zoo!

Hello everyone! Today was the best day of my trip so far because I FED A GIRAFFE! That’s right, today I visited Reid Park Zoo and they where kind enough to let me feed one of their stunning Reticulated Giraffes! However, I promise that’s not all I talk about today...

I also discuss some of the zoos other animals. These include: Elephants, Rhinos, Anteaters, Tapirs, Jaguars, and Lions!

Plus, I discuss the best piece of zoo interpretation I’ve ever seen… a big elephant booty that makes a noise when you smack it! (I’m not making this up)

Finally, I talk about my trip to The University of Arizona and my childhood fear of late night swimming!

This week Jack is joined by Dagmar der Weduwen, a PhD student and Archerfishionando! What that means is she knows all about the wonderful world of archerfish! So, the duo discuss the archerfish's bizarre hunting techniques, why the fish would make excellent firefighters, how clever they are and the threats that they face!

Jack and Dagmar also discuss their shared love of St Andrews; why Dungeons & Dragons is the perfect cure for PhD stress; Social Learning; the importance of mangrove ecosystems; and how the IUCN Red List, while often useful, can also not always be the most helpful…

  • ReZOO #14: Farewell Bristol Zoo (with Connor Davies, Engagement & Learning Presenter)

Welcome back to 'ReZOO: The Zoo Review Podcast'! As you may have heard, Bristol Zoo recently closed it's gates for the very last time. Therefore, Jack and Jodi wanted to memorialise this wonderful collection and celebrate the joy it brought them. Instead of covering the usual topics, to start off the episode Jack is joined by the fantastic Connor Davies, one of Bristol Zoo's Engagement and Learning presenters! This dynamic duo discuss the importance and history of this amazing zoo, and Connor's memories with this incredible place. Then, Jodi returns to give her two stars and final thoughts!

Bristol Zoo was home to some amazing creatures, including Gorillas, Lions, Bats, Seals, Penguins and Red Pandas; and at 186 years old, it was the 5th oldest zoo in the world. We hope this send off brings you as much joy as Bristol Zoo brought us. So, raise your cups and let's say one final farewell to the fabulous Bristol Zoo!

  • 56. Telling Stories About Telling Conservation Stories (with Stephanie Martin from Step(h)IntoNature)

Today Jack is joined by Stephanie Martin, an environmental communicator and the creator of Stephintonature.com, to tell stories about telling stories!

Whether they are fact or fiction, based in reality or totally bizarre, stories have been used for a very long time to communicate important messages and teach people something new. In the realm of conservation storytelling can therefore be an important tool... but it is a tool that must be used thoughtfully and respectfully. Today, Jack and Steph talk about how you can do just that!

They share their experiences with writing stories, telling myths and legends and speaking more scientifically. They also chat about how they make sure that they tell stories in a way that is respectful and culturally sensitive. Finally, they highlight some of the stories which mean the most to Steph. These include fortress conservation, parachute conservation, mismanagement of land in the UK, and Seagulls and pigeons!
