Welcome to a very, very special episode! I am so excited to say that I have been named as BIAZA’s Rising Star of 2023. BIAZA is the British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the award recognises the efforts of an individual who has gone above and beyond to support their collection and the wider zoo community (imagine if the zoo world had Oscars)! Today, I am going to tell you all about why this means the world to me!
I am grateful to everyone who has supported me in this brilliantly bizarre conservation journey, you are the reason I keep going and I owe you the entire world. This award is for…
Holly and Amy (who nominated me),
Jodi (my zoo partner in crime),
Everyone in the zoo world who has shown me such kindness,
Everyone at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland for being a beautiful and supportive family,
And my Mum, Dad and Sister, who have given me the entire world and encouraged me to follow every pathway… even if it leads to somewhere unpredictable!
I should also thank Dharma, Gloria, Snowflake, Qabid, Mo and all the other animals who are my constant inspiration. I won’t stop working until we live in a world where nature is protected, valued and loved. I love you all. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You 💚

Can you name the five great apes? This week Jack is joined by Gerry Ellis, a wildlife photographer, podcast host and founder of GLOBIO - a non-profit that creates environmental films and provides training for other conservation organisations on how they can share their story. Starting with a chat about his early career and how he came to fall in love with apes, the duo then move on to discuss how great apes are faring in the age of the Anthropocene. They talk about the struggles these amazing creatures face, their complex stories, and how all of us can make a difference to their lives!
Jack also asks Gerry about his time working with Dr Jane Goodall, his love for the nature around him and why he keeps coming back to apes as the focus of his work! This episode takes us from the study sites of Dian Fossey in Rwanda, to the forests of Madagascar.

The episode starts with an introduction to this incredible animal and a chat about what makes each of the four different members of hyaenidae distinct (the Spotted Hyena, Striped Hyena, Brown Hyena & Aardwolf).
Then, Jack and Christine move on to talk about fence ecology and human-wildlife conflict. Plus, they discuss some of the creative ways that conflicts have been resolved. This includes working with communities, building specialised farm equipment and painting eyes on cow's bottoms!

Are you ready to stand tall for giraffe? Some of you may remember that 2 years ago we released an episode all about the wonderful world of the giraffe! Well, since this series we are celebrating all things Africa it felt wrong not to include them, and so we are republishing that episode for you all to enjoy... or maybe for you all to discover for the first time!
So, today Jack is joined by the incredible Julian and Stephanie Fennessy from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to discuss all things giraffe! The trio discuss their incredible work all across the continent of Africa, the wonderful educations programmes they are running and the practical in the field conservation initiatives that they help to operate!
Since this episode aired originally, Jack has had the pleasure of meeting Julian and Stephanie in real life when they visited Edinburgh Zoo last year - it was an absolute joy! Alongside a trip to Scotland, Julian & Stephanie's calendar has also included a lot of very hard work! The Giraffe Conservation Foundation now works in around 18 countries on anti-poaching campaigns, translocations, surveying, and education. They have just gone from strength to strength and it is an honour to have them on the show!

Today I am going to share the story of the first time I ever saw a pangolin in real life!
With over 100 podcast episodes, 10 conference presentations and a whole bunch of education work done in its name, the excitement was overwhelming. I am so grateful that they exist and that they are just as magical in person. The waddles, the sniffles, the curling into a ball. The moments of confusion, the awkward climbing, the gentle curiosity. The scales, the tongue, the tired eyes. The way it’s scales shimmer in the sunlight and the way they dance in the speckled shade. The fact they are unlike anything else on our beautiful planet. That’s what makes the pangolin special. That’s why I love them.
Please do everything you can to protect the pangolin. Raise awareness of the fact it is the most trafficked mammal in the world, donate funds to conservation organisations, support the people on the front line who are doing incredible research into this beautiful species. Thank you all for supporting this long distance relationship for the last 3 years. Pangolin: The Conservation Podcast and all it has brought me has made them a wild ride. Here’s to the next 100 years of obsession.
This is also a special video episode and features clips of the pangolin in its habitat at Prague Zoo!

Today Jack is joined once again by the absolutely fabulous Robi Watkinson, to discuss his experiences across the continent of Africa! Last time the duo chatted all about the things they should never tell their parents... like being chased by painted hunting dogs and hanging out of the side of planes!
This time Jack and Robi talk about much more responsible things, like the Masters in Conservation Biology that Robi is studying at the University of Cape Town, the importance of diversity in conservation, and the power that bringing voices from around the world together has!
They also chat about some of the under-appreciated species which Robi is fascinated by, this includes a very elusive orchid and the charmingly petit Cape Leopard!
Finally Robi shares advice on the importance of looking after your mental health in the field of conservation, something which he sums up so beautifully and Jack couldn’t endorse more!
