This compilation from the late great Mighty Sparrow showcases Sparrow's versatility. Sparrow was the epitome of what a great Calypsonian is. He addresses world affairs, politics, patriotism, relationships, colonialism, and the one subject he's best known for....S E X !! Double entendres galore, heavily dipped in wit and tongue firmly planted in cheek. ;-)

Slinger Francisco ORTT CM OBE, OCC (July 9, 1935 – September 27, 2026), better known as Mighty Sparrow, was a Trinidadian calypso vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. Known as the "Calypso King of the World", he was one of the best-known and most successful calypsonians. Francisco won Trinidad's Carnival Road March competition eight times, Calypso King/Monarch eight times, and twice won the Calypso King of Kings title.
Slinger Francisco was born in the fishing village of Grand Roy, Grenada, British West Indies, on 9 July 1935. He moved to the Colony of Trinidad and Tobago as a one-year-old with his mother, his father later relocating there in 1937. He grew up in Laventille, a suburb of Port of Spain. He began singing as a small child, but his love of calypso was discouraged while at Newtown Boys Catholic School, where he sang in the choir. At the age of 14, he joined a steel band comprising neighborhood boys, and performed with the band at Carnival.
He received his performing name "Little Sparrow" during his early career, as a result of his energetic stage performances:
Your calypso name is given to you by your peers, based on your style. In the old days they tried to emulate British royalty. There was Lord Kitchener, Lord Nelson, Duke. When I started singing, the bands were still using acoustic instruments and the singers would stand flat footed, making a point or accusing someone in the crowd with the pointing of a finger, but mostly they stood motionless. When I sing, I get excited and move around, much like James Brown, and this was new to them. The older singers said "Why don't you just sing instead of moving around like a little sparrow?" It was said as a joke, but the name stuck.— Mighty Sparrow
Rest in power to the Calypso King Of The World!
This is strictly his "jump up" vibes. This is only a snapshot of "Birdie's" contributions. Stay tuned for more! -Papa Robbie

The legendary King Yellowman & the iconic Sagittarius Band performing live and "rude" in Chicago. There is no reggae artist like King Yellowman, and there will never be another! Pass it on. He gets a little naughty on this one, so it's not entirely for "innocent" ears but the music and vibes are infectious.
I only acknowledge one dancehall KING....and it's King Yellowman!
Enjoy! -Papa Robbie

Aswad is a British reggae group, noted for adding strong R&B and soul influences to the reggae sound. They have been performing since the mid-1970s, and have released 21 albums. Their UK hit singles include the number one "Don't Turn Around" and "Shine". "Aswad" is Arabic for "black".
The members of Aswad are UK descendants of immigrants from the Caribbean. They attended John Kelly/Holland Park School. Aswad was formed in 1975 in the Ladbroke Grove area of West London.
The original members of Aswad were guitarist/vocalist Brinsley "Chaka B" Forde, drummer/vocalist Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, lead guitarist/vocalist Donald "Dee" Griffiths, bassist George "Ras" Oban, and keyboardist Courtney "Khaki" Hemmings. Aswad were the backing band of Burning Spear's 1977 Live album, recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London. Other contributors included Vin Gordon, and Karl Pitterson.
Initially, the band produced music in the roots reggae vein, with members contributing songs individually and with Forde acting as the band's principal songwriter. The band's dynamic soon began to change however. Shortly after the release of their self-titled debut album in 1976, Hemmings left and was replaced by Tony "Gad" Robinson (the only time in the band's history where a departing member would be officially replaced by an incoming musician).
The band has toured extensively, playing in diverse locations from London's Royal Albert Hall and Montego Bay's Reggae Sunsplash, to gigs in West Africa, Israel and Japan.
Aswad underwent their first line-up change in sixteen years in 1996, when Forde departed the band for spiritual reasons, leaving Gaye as the only founding member. Once again, the remaining members opted not to seek to recruit a replacement musician, and thus Aswad became a duo of Gaye and Robinson. With the exception of a brief reunion with Forde in 2009 for the Island record label's 50th-anniversary celebrations, the band's line-up remained the same until Angus Gaye’s death on 2 September 2022, aged 62.

A celebration of his Royal Badness' musical legacy. A snapshot of his genius.
He didn't believe in celebrating birthdays, but the lovers of his music choose to celebrate his musical contributions year 'round, but especially around his birthday (June 7th).
This one is good for cleaning up the house, or a nice long ride in the car.
It's not a mix but a collage of some of his extended versions.

Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) was an African American revolutionary and Black nationalist leader, who came from a background of poverty, family disruption, and criminal activity, to a prominent figure during the civil rights movement until his assassination in 1965. He discovered the religious organization the Nation of Islam while in prison and served as its spokesperson from 1952 until 1964. He was also a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the African American community. A controversial figure accused of preaching violence, Malcolm X is also a celebrated figure with Black people and Muslims worldwide for his pursuit of racial justice.
Here are some excerpts from a few of his speeches laid over a bed of classic hip hop tracks. -Papa Robbie

Bunny Wailer (Neville O'Riley Livingston), born April 10, 1947, and died March 2, 2021, was a Jamaican singer-songwriter, percussionist, and founding member of The Wailers, along with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.
A pivotal figure in reggae, he was known as the group's "spiritual ambassador" and a champion of the roots reggae style. Turn up your headphones or your speakers, and let the drum and bass nice up your space!
