Wayne Mcsweeney came to San Francisco, California, from Ireland in 1996. Being himself,  a person of conscience and curiousity, he sought out the Tenderloin where he found beauty and brokenness and humanity.

It’s Christmas, a time where supposedly people remember, at least for a day or two, to be kind, to share, to help those in need. In 2020 United States we are still under the shadow of selfishness and greed. We have allowed fear mongers and liars to lead us. It’s time for healing.

This episode of Paradigms is dedicated to “the bottom billion” who live as cast-offs by our wealthy societies. Wayne’s music and conversation with Baruch can inspire the spirit of the season, and hopefully extend it.

The songs on Wayne’s album Tales From The Tenderloin are poignant, honest, and beautiful celebrations of our humanity, of the goodness we can manifest when we make that choice.

Nightsong is John Reed, Jo Beth Young, and Ali Karim. Their new record is 16 songs inspired by the past to inform the present for a more deliberate and better future for humanity. The album release is December 21, Winter Solstice, 2020.

“The songs of The Peasants’ Revolt show that the lot of peasants varied across the country. The songs give an insight into the fabric of medieval society. Medieval life is often portrayed through its pageantry and costume, its battles and political machinations, its intrigue and its danger. Yet most people (between 80% or 90%) lived off the land. Winters were long and hard, cold and hungry. In the summer months, they would wake at first light and work until the light faded. Peasants were mainly tied to the service of a local lord: the church, a baron, and through them to the king.” – John Reed

CeCe Gable is a Jazz vocalist who has performed throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. Originally from Ohio, CeCe has moved around, spent time in Vermont, and eventually settled down in Reno, Nevada where she has been a featured Guest Artist with the Reno Jazz Orchestra, the Reno Philharmonic, the Reno Pops and the Carson Symphony.

CeCe’s new record More Than A Song is a soothing bright listen. CeCe has also just released a single which is not on the album Once Again It’s Winter.

Baruch and CeCe share a conversation about the music, inspiration, CeCe’s life, and how we’re all dealing with the current stressors.

Jim Kweskin has been an iconic figure on the music scene for decades! He grew up listening to the music of his time, Swing and Jazz and Folk, and went on to found the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Kweskin has lived in community most of his life. One of the children raised in that community is Samoa Wilson who has become a singer. Jim and Samoa have been making music together since Samoa was a child. Now they have a new album out I Just Want To Be Horizontal which will get you up and moving and possibly even singing along!

Dahlia Dumont is The Blue Dahlia. Raised in Brooklyn, a traveler and student of human nature, Dahlia writes, composes, sings and plays music that Is both light and solid. She explores styles from Post-war Pop to contemporary electronica.

Dahlia is an anthropologist. The discussion between Dahlia and Baruch looks at the United States, the current state of the social contract between people, what is disrupting that and how we can repair it.

La Tradition Americaine is Dahlia’s most recent album, but recently she released a single Betty about voting.
