Παρά (para) is a preposition meaning ‘alongside’. Αλλος (allos) can be used in Greek as both a suffix like here and a prefix and it means ‘another’ . The combined word was an adjective and the original use by the ancient Greeks was in Mathematics to describe to equidistant surfaces or lines. Then the word expanded to physics and all sciences before it took off in grammar and literature. In English it came around the 16th century from French and Latin. ΠΑΡΑΛΛΗΛΟ/PARALLEL
