Coping with an Alzheimer-stricken parent is already a testing journey, let alone during the COVID-19 pandemic. For Mark Resnick, an entrepreneur, husband, father, author and sports-enthusiast, his early gift of journaling became an outlet to process his emotions. David Mansilla migrated from South America to Canada with entrepreneurship coursing through his veins. Frustrated by an unchallenging corporate world, he started his own software business. His sacrifices and dedication led to 6-figure gains for his company.   

However, this came with a steep price. David’s personal life was disintegrating, and was saved by a heart attack at 40.   

David upended his family and left for Thailand on a soul-searching journey. He returned with his family intact, but his ego returned to the driver seat. David momentarily battled alcoholism and weight gain, but turned to inspiring books, podcasts, a healthy lifestyle and meditation for salvation.   

A new outlook on life spurred the “Break free” mission. David became the author of the bestselling book “Breaking out of Corporate Jail,” host of the podcast “Break Free,” and is now a mentor and philanthropist- all while running his successful company ISU Corp in Waterloo, Ontario.

The success story of team “Ke-onny” spotlights how our differences can become our greatest asset. Johnny Bridgewater’s upbringing was defined by his expulsion from Milwaukee Public Schools, an urge to get into fights,  and the cycle of teenage parenthood. At 18, his son entered the world and kickstarted a long, arduous journey to his present career. From parks to garage gyms, Johnny built his dream- Bridgewater Performance, a sports enhancement facility that serves a spectrum of athletes from middle school students to elite athletes.   

His business partner Keith Kahfeldt hailed from the idyllic suburban life. After graduating with a Communications degree from Concordia University, Keith was beckoned by the sport training world. With no experience, he reset his professional path by cleaning gyms and studying the habits of trainers. Keith was introduced to Johnny, and their partnership was instantly magical. 

The two become founders and co-owners of Elite Training MKE in Wisconsin. Both Johnny and Keith share insights into their successful partnership, the lessons they learn from each other, and the importance of service to their communities.

Desiree Cocroft is a living example of the expression “Carpe Diem” (seize the day). The transformation coach, speaker, podcast host,  author of “Get Your Life Today,” and co-founder of the Signature Dance Company is a proud Milwaukee native who started ‘executing her own life’ at the young age of 17.   At 24, the MBA graduate started her not-for-profit dance company to transform the lives of women and girls through dance. She also took on additional mentoring roles and served as the Program Coordinator at PEARLS for Teen Girls.  

However, Desiree wanted more out of life. The transformation coach was suppressing her own greatness, and reached out for mentoring herself. Nate Johnson, a Former District Attorney and prosecutor left the legal world to go behind bars and teach inmates how to write.   

The University of Iowa law alumnus had a string of failures after his graduation, dabbling in public relations, construction, landscaping, and even joining the marines. Alcoholism, marihuana use and unhealed trauma from his parents’ divorce contributed to his downward spiral .  

A quiet epiphany turned the tables for Nate.   After he passed the bar, Nate ascended to success. However, the prosecutor was being called to another purpose- this time behind the bars. Nate gave up his practice and started the free-writers movement, freewriters.org. He uses writing as an instrument of therapy to incarcerated persons. He is driven by the belief that “everyday there’s someone whose soul gets woken up by the things they put on paper.”

This week's guest has a story that connects former US President Barack Obama, opera singing, a civil war, and a non-verbal learning disability. Annie Homsy-Harris was born with a learning disability, and music became an outlet of expression.  Annie’s ensuing opera career was inspired by her grandfather’s groundbreaking role as the first Syrian to perform with the Travelling Metropolitan Opera Company.   

Annie focuses on her most difficult task- reacquainting herself with basic learning concepts every day. She also shares her call for legislative change to remove educational barriers for persons like herself, attracting a gratitude letter from the former US President.

He is an unassuming educator who uses hip hop as a conduit for transforming lives. Vernon Thompson devotes his life to working in at-risk environments, serving as the Assistant Principal of the Warren G Harding High School in Connecticut. As a child Vernon watched his father, then pastor of the Eastern Baptist Church, pour his entire being into community service. A stable and nurturing home environment allowed Vernon to recognize the gaps that are missing from his students’ lives. This also spurred his pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Special Education with a concentration in Learning Disabilities.

Vernon’s podcast describes the precarious environments his students come from, and how hip hop music opens up communication channels. A hyper-competitive high school athlete, Tricia Roos balanced six sports and the vision of becoming a coach. At aged 20, the Baylor University student converted a marketing stint at  Bishop Lynch High School into a full-fledged volleyball coaching role. Her success saw the girls’ team ascend to State Champions four consecutive times.   

But beneath this success, Tricia was battling a tragic development known as Trisomy 18, threatening her second pregnancy. Tricia defied research and her doctor’s advice and brought her daughter Annabelle into this world.

From Layan Hill in Belmont, Port of Spain, Trinidad, Mtima was raised by his doting grandparents, steps away from a crack cocaine block.    When the blistering sting of poverty struck, a then desperate 13 -year-old Mtima found a side hustle-selling drugs. Together with his 9 and 11-year-old friends, Mtima paid off police officers after ‘failed’ drug raids, witnessed how the cocaine trade desecrated lives and landed in prison at 16.   

A Life skills training center called SERVOL, coupled with his discovery of Islam at 21 saved Mtima from self-destruction. In this podcast, Mtima, the CEO and Founder of the Roots Foundation, Prison Chaplain and Master’s graduate in Sociology, details his experience with bullying and fighting back; his struggles to find academic success after his transformation; how poetry became a life-saving tool, and the powerful role of faith in giving him a second lease on life.
