Rav Mike's annual shiur in memory of his father Charles Feuer z"l. This is an exploration of the meaning of liberation, freedom and what lies between them. Listen close, because there are some important messages for our time. 

The Jewish Story is about to go 'split screen' between the world of Christianity and the world of Islam. Here is a class which sets the scene leading up to that period.

This class finishes setting the stage for the Middle Age. It introduces critical frames for view Jewish history, particular the hermeneutic battle and the theology of exile. In addition, it tells the story of a little known reappearance of Jewish sovereignty in the 7th century.

This class opens with a recapitulation of the process of formation nof the gemara, moves through an overview of the state of the Roman Empire and ends with a look at the relationship between Patristic Christianity and Judaism. That's why it is called setting the stage for the Middle Age.

The last in the series of our discussion of the gemara, this class focuses on the sealing of the conversation. In addition, we discuss the power of this sealing to build an identity based in text and law.

Traditional Jews in the modern world generally try to reconcile their religious convictions with contemporary scientific findings, as in the case of interpreting Genesis in light of evolutionary theory.  What happens when certain halakhot are based on biological assumptions which are no longer valid?  Our instinct may be to assert that the law should change.  Yet sometimes changing the law creates moral problems, forcing us to choose between scientific truths and ethical principles.   We’ll explore three different examples of this problem and try to develop a framework for grappling with this dilemma. 

This class continues the discussion of the emergence of the gemara. We map out the parallel development of Jewish life in the land of Israel and Bavel, and ask the underlying question of whether one can miss the boat in history.
