We talk with Dr. Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan from Ohio State University who has done a TON of research on families and their relationships. She's done research on co-parenting, gatekeeping, infant development, and more.
Professor Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan received her B.A. in Psychology from Northwestern University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Schoppe-Sullivan is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on co-parenting, father-child relationships, and the transition to parenthood, and a Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations. Dr. Schoppe-Sullivan is a deputy editor of the Journal of Marriage and Family, as well as a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Family Psychology, Parenting: Science and Practice, and the Journal of Family Theory and Review.
Dr. Schoppe-Sullivan’s research focuses on the family as the primary context for young children’s social-emotional development, with three central areas of interest. The first is co-parenting relationships – how effectively adults within families coordinate their roles as parents – and the implications of the quality of co-parenting relationships for child and family functioning; The second is the roles of fathers in families, particularly the roles of fathers within co-parenting relationships; and the third is the effects of children’s characteristics and behavior on family relationships.

We talk with Dr. Jennifer Harman about the International Conference on Shared Parenting in 2020. The topics of the conference explored domestic violence and shared parenting. This is a great event for parents, lawyers, mental health professionals, and researchers to come together and further the science behind shared parenting.
Dr. Jennifer Jill Harman is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Colorado State University in the Applied Social & Health Psychology program. She received her doctorate in Social Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2005 and specializes in the study of intimate relationships. She also has two master's degrees from Teacher's College, Columbia University in psychological counseling, and served as a family and substance abuse counselor for several years prior to her entry into academia. She is currently an associate professor of psychology at Colorado State University.
Dr. Harman regularly conducts training for legal and mental health professionals on parental alienation and has served as an expert witness and consultant on civil and criminal cases involving parental alienation and other forms of family violence.

In today’s episode, we interviewed Dr. Linda Nielsen, a renowned researcher in the world of shared parenting and father-daughter relationships. In her interview, she talks about her book “Improving Father-Daughter Relationships: A Guide for Women and their Dads” and how fathers and daughters benefit from good relationships with each other. She is a Professor of Education at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, NC. She received her Master’s degree and her doctorate in Educational Psychology and Counseling from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville before joining the faculty in 1976. After joining the faculty, she created a course in Adolescent Psychology and wrote three editions of a textbook, Adolescence: A Contemporary View. This textbook received outstanding reviews and was widely used in universities across the United States for over a decade.
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Nielsen has become an internationally recognized expert on father-daughter relationships and on shared parenting (joint physical custody) for children of divorce. She developed the first, and perhaps only, university course on fathers and daughters in the country. Author of five books on the topic, she also writes blogs for Psychology Today, the Institute of Family Studies at the University of Virginia, and The Huffington Post.

In today’s episode I interview Parental Alienation researcher Dr. William Barnet. He talks to us about his research in measuring splitting in parental alienation with the “The Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire”.
Dr. William Bernet, is a graduate of Holy Cross College, summa cum laude, and Harvard Medical School, he is a professor emeritus at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in general psychiatry, child psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry. As an expert in forensic psychiatry, Dr. Bernet has testified about 300 times in 24 states. Dr. Bernet has written professional articles and book chapters on a variety of subjects, including group and individual therapy with children and adolescents; humor in psychotherapy; forensic child psychiatry; child maltreatment; true and false allegations of abuse; satanic ritual abuse; reincarnation; child custody and visitation; parental alienation; testimony regarding behavioral genomics; and risk management.
In 2007, Dr. Bernet and Judge Don R. Ash published Children of Divorce: A Practical Guide for Parents, Therapists, Attorneys, and Judges. Dr. Bernet edited Parental Alienation, DSM-5, and ICD-11, which was published in 2010. Dr. Bernet and his colleagues edited Parental Alienation: The Handbook for Mental Health and Legal Professionals, which was published in 2013. He was the founder and first president of the Parental Alienation Study Group.

In today’s episode, we ask, Is shared parenting a good idea in high conflict divorces? I interview Dr. William Fabricius as he discusses his research on shared parenting in cases where the parents are in high conflict. He also talks about how educating lawyers, legislators, and judges in Arizona helped reform their family law statutes.
William Fabricius is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University. He is interested in the role of father-child relationships in protecting children’s mental and physical health. He does research on young children’s cognitive and social-cognitive development. He’s worked with stakeholders at the state level in Arizona to translate knowledge about father-child relationships into evidence-based social policy for divorced and never-married parents. This resulted in 2013 legislation establishing a de facto presumption for equal parenting time and decision-making. He also advises other countries (Canada, Japan, Denmark) and other US states on similar legislation.

In this episode we talk with Dr. Edward Kruk who is an Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of British Columbia, specializing in child and family policy. He’s worked in Canada and the U.K.. He’s has practiced in the fields of welfare rights, child protection, school social work, hospital social work, and family services. He is currently teaching and practicing in the areas of family mediation and addiction.
He’s got a few books out including his first book, Divorce and Disengagement which was the first in-depth study of the experiences of divorced fathers and the phenomenon of father absence after divorce. He’s also published two other books. Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Social Work and the Human Services and Divorced Fathers: Children’s Needs and Parental Responsibilities.
He’s published numerous peer-reviewed research articles in a range of social policy, social work, sociology, and other scholarly journals on topics such as parental alienation, shared parenting, family law reform, family mediation, children and divorce, and women and addiction.
