  • What to do About Picky Eaters | POF105

I was my parent’s worst nightmare...I was, and still am, a picky eater. I wish my parents knew my guest, Heidi Miller when I was growing up.

When our kids don’t eat what we want them to, eat too little, eat too much, don’t want to sit at the table or get up constantly, we worry. We worry about their health and if they are getting enough nutrition and connection during family time.

Heidi says that kids “aren’t picky, just to be PICKY”. She says there is always a reason behind the behavior.

In this episode, we talk about the factors that can be getting in the way of your kids eating:

Physiological sensory allergies and more Why families eating together at mealtimes matter What NOT to do (hint: don’t force it!) As long as our kids are eating 60% of what we serve, they are doing well! How to manage our expectations How to use smart snacks

RED FLAGS 🚩 For a Feeding PROBLEM

Child eats fewer than 20 foods

Child does not eat an entire food group

Mealtime is a very stressful time for the family because of the child’s behaviors (food throwing, table avoidance, tantrums)

    Child is very brand specific

Child shows aversion to being around new foods or non-preferred food

Reasons to seek intervention even if your child accepts a variety of foods child gags, vomits or chokes while eating or drinking difficulty chewing, child is pocketing food, and drools only eats certain textures eats small volumes of food or takes a very long time to eat (over 30 minutes)

  • Did I Say That Outloud? With Kristin van Ogtrop | POF102
As our kids grow up, we age right along with them…unfortunately! Well, it’s not really unfortunate because with age comes wisdom, gratitude and some painful experiences (physically and emotionally).
My guest, Kristin van Ogtrop, talks about what it’s like as we get older and the little indignities we face from our kids growing up and away from us, our bodies not being as reliable as they once were, the frustration and humiliation of menopause, and the pain of losing friends and family – it’s a good thing Kristin is SO FUNNY!
She talks about these topics in her book, “Did I Say That Outloud? Midlife Indignities and How to Survive Them.”  She talks with humor and levity and ultimately gratitude on the journey we are on in midlife.
In this episode we talk about:
          The indignities…
Embracing imperfection (as I inelegantly demonstrate at the end)
Facing mortality and how she became known as “The Fork Lady” when she had her own troubling and hilarious health crisis (hilarious now, in retrospect)
Watching our kids grow up and away from us and how we can make sense of it

It’s the 100th episode of Parenting our Future!  Help me celebrate by entering my draw to win prizes valued at over $5000!   Go to www.parentingourfuture.com When you enter, you will be sent a gift from me:  “Quick Fixes for Frustrated Families”

With my 100th episode coming up, I found myself reflecting on my motherhood journey and my journey as a parent coach. I’ve been a mom now, for almost 16 years.  I can’t believe it myself when I say that.  I have learned so much along the way…all of which, I didn’t know when I first became a mom.

In reflecting, I wanted to share with you some of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way.  I’ve learned these lessons from my training as a coach, from the experts that have helped my husband and I in our parenting our child with extra needs, from the WONDERFUL guests I’ve had the honour of speaking with on this podcast, and from the courage and vulnerability of the clients I work with.

In this 100th episode and in the next, I’m sharing the top 10 most impactful lessons I’ve learned.

In part 2, I talk about:

    1) Feeling like you’re failing is a shared experience and it’s ok to ask for help!  It’s ok to say this is hard!

    2) The story you’re telling yourself is often the problem in the situation

    3) When Connection is high, Resistance is low

    4) Focus on teaching NOT on punishing

    5) Embracing grace, going easy on yourself and forgiveness

For my handout on challenging the story you’re telling yourself, join the Parent Toolbox membership at www.parent-toolbox.com

As a review, In part 1, I talked about:

    1) How Parenting isn’t an emergency (okay, unless there’s blood or broken bones! 😉

    2) Your child behavior is NEVER PERSONAL – even if they say they hate you!

    3) How Listening to your kids is the greatest path to connection – “talk less and listen more” is such a game changer

    4) We need to be a safe place for our kids and that means showing them empathy and validating their feelings…even if you DON’T agree

    5) Accepting your child for who they are, not who you wish they were

  • Executive Functioning: What It Is & How It Affects Your Child's Behaviour| POF98
It takes a village to raise a child, right? Well I’m extremely proud to introduce you to someone in my own family’s village, Behavior Analysist, Michele Shilvock. She is an expert on behavior and what drives it.
I invited her on the show because she has taught us so much about how the brain works when it comes to the eight areas of Executive Functioning. When kids have deficiencies in these areas, they can look like your kids being lazy, forgetful or unorganized, but in reality, they don’t have the skill YET and might need some help (remember, brains aren’t fully grown until mid to late 20’s!). When you understand how the brain works better, it makes is so much easier to understand and solve behavior that’s frustrating or confusing.
In this episode we talk about:
    • What is Executive Functioning • What are the 8 areas of Executive Functioning • How do you know if your child is lacking in any of the 8 areas • How deficiencies show up as “bad behavior” • How kids behavior is misunderstood in school

  • When You Wonder, You’re Learning. Lessons from Mr. Rogers | POF97

It all started on February 19th, 1968 when the first episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood aired. Little did we know that the simple sets, sweaters, sneakers, and little trolly were all made deliberately to foster a love of learning and wonder. In this episode, I’m talking to Mr. Rogers Super Fans, Greg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski, who co-authored the book, When You Wonder You’re Learning – Mister Rogers’ Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids. Both were raised in Pennsylvania, the home of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, and grew up watching and learning from him. In their work, as adults, they have taken the learnings from Fred Rogers and the science of learning to help guide us to raise kids with a love of learning, that lights them up. In this episode we talk about: ● How artful and sophisticated Mr. Rogers was in his show and teachings ● How we know more about the science of how people learn and what’s really important (Mr. Rogers was way ahead of his time!) ● When it comes to learning, how important it is for a child to be listened to, their need to feel physically and psychologically safe, and to feel loved and capable of loving ● The “Fred Method” for learning, which is Curiosity, Creativity, Communication and working together. ● Learning loss during the Pandemic and what learning is really important ● The power of wonder You can find Gregg and Ryan’s book, When you Wonder, You’re Learning, anywhere books are sold. For your copy of the first chapter of their book for free, go to www.parent-toolbox.com About Gregg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski Gregg Behr is a father, children’s advocate, and director for the Grable Foundation whose work has drawn comparisons to his hero, Fred Rogers. Formed in Rogers’ real-life neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Remake Learning has turned heads everywhere from Forbes to the World Economic Forum for its efforts to ignite children’s curiosity, encourage creativity, and foster justice and belonging in schools, libraries, museums, and more. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and also Duke University, Gregg holds honorary degrees from Carlow University and Saint Vincent College. • Let's Talk Money with Stephanie Sims | POF96
Were you taught it’s rude to talk about money?  In my family growing up, money was always an issue but we never talked about how to use it, save it, or invest it.  I know I’m not alone in this, and you might be struggling with this too.
So how do you learn how to handle your money if it’s a taboo subject?  Thankfully Stephanie Sims is here to tell us all about it.  She is a budget coach and has come from having a negative net worth to living debt-free with a positive net worth.

In this episode we talk about:
Money trauma (I never knew this was a thing and I can totally relate to it!)
The generational cycles related to money
Why debt is a safe place and why we like to stay       there
How money doesn’t love your money problems
          And so much more
