We understand that emotional overwhelm can arise from both positive and negative emotions, such as joy or frustration. Meanwhile, physical overwhelm may manifest as sensory issues or feeling unsafe in one's physical environment. Sensory overwhelm, can be triggered by certain noises, smells, or textures that can overwhelm sensitive individuals. Organizational overwhelm, can come from things that looks simple like cleaning their rooms.

In this episode, we tackle the topic of advocating for our kids. Basically, standing up for our children's needs.
Advocating for your children means defending their unique needs and making sure they are understood and met by others. For kids with special needs and emotionally intense kids, advocacy is not just an option, but a necessity.
But let's not sugarcoat it - advocating for your own children can be tough. It disrupts the system and may result in judgment from others. However, that shouldn't stop us from fighting for what our kids needs.
To begin advocating, it's crucial to first know our children's needs and strengths. This means taking the time for observation and reflection, getting to the core of who they are and what makes them tick.
Understanding our legal rights, as well as our child's legal rights in the healthcare, school, or daycare system, is another vital aspect of successful advocacy. Knowing the system and advocating within its boundaries can make a significant impact on our child's journey.
Finding the right approach to expressing our child's needs is crucial. We discuss the importance of doing so in a non-confrontational way, taking into consideration the perspectives and limitations of others. It's a delicate balance of advocating fiercely and respectfully.
So, join us in this episode as we explore the world of advocating for our kids. Together, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment where our children can thrive.

In this episode, we dive into strategies to help you, parents, stay calm (or as calm as possible) during your child's most intense moments.
As we explore the theme of staying calm in the midst of an outburst, it's essential to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. While breathing exercises can help in the heat of the moment, true calmness requires sustainable practices.
We touch on the importance of self-care, including practices such as yoga, meditation, and breath work, which can regulate the nervous system and provide much-needed serenity during intense moments. Cultivating these self-care practices outside of challenging situations is crucial to effectively implement them when needed most.
Moreover, feeling confident in your parenting decisions and releasing the worry of judgment from others can significantly contribute to staying calm. We understand that developing self-care routines and building confidence takes time, but these are worthy long-term investments in both your own well-being and your child's.
It is also vital to identify triggers and understand your child's needs. By knowing your own triggers and finding ways to reduce their intensity, you can better regulate yourself in intense situations.
Taking care of your basic needs, including proper nutrition and physical comfort, is another essential element to staying calm. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Welcome to another episode of "Parenting the Intensity"! In this episode, we dive deep into the topic of helping our kids calm down in the heat of the moment.
Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all solution, but we're here to help you navigate the challenges. We emphasize the importance of understanding that your child's behavior is a result of their internal struggles, not a deliberate attempt to make your parenting difficult.
In this episode, we highlight two main principles: refraining from engaging in power struggles and taking on the role of a detective to identify triggers that can be managed or prevented.
We know this approach takes time, energy, and patience, it's a continuous learning process as children grow and change.
We invite you to share your own experiences and ideas with us, as we believe that together we can find solutions that work for each individual child.

In this episode of "Parenting the Intensity," we dive deep into the challenges that parents face when their children exhibit intense emotions. From meltdowns to outbursts, our children sometimes struggle to express their feelings in a healthy and controlled manner. This episode explores why our kids may seem to be at their worst with us.
We start by examining the dynamics of parent-child relationships and how children often feel safer expressing their intense emotions with their parents. This can lead to frequent meltdowns when we're around, but it doesn't mean we're doing anything wrong as parents. In fact, it's a sign that our children trust us enough to let their guard down.
The discussion also touches on the distinction between children's behaviors at home and in other environments like school or with grandparents. It's not that our children are better behaved elsewhere, but rather that they feel safest at home, allowing them to fully express their emotions.
Join us on "Parenting the Intensity" as we unravel the complexities of raising emotionally intense children and explore ways to provide them with the understanding and support they need.

Welcome to "Parenting the Intensity," the podcast that supports parents raising emotionally intense children. In this episode, titled "We are the Experts of Our Kids," we explore the importance of trusting ourselves as parents and recognizing our expertise in understanding our children.
We often doubt our parenting abilities, especially when confronted with conflicting advice from numerous experts. However, we are the ones who see our children in all situations, gathering information from various sources and making connections that others cannot. This unique perspective makes us the true experts of our own children.
Being an expert doesn't mean doing everything ourselves. It would be overwhelming! As parents, we have the ability to gather input and ideas from others, including fellow parents and family members. We can filter this information through what we know about our children and decide what aligns with our values and their needs.
In future episodes, we will discuss solutions and ideas for parenting emotionally intense kids. We'll share our own suggestions and invite experts as guests, providing a range of perspectives. Remember, these suggestions are not prescriptions. They are meant to help you discover what works best for your family.
Thank you for joining us on this episode of "Parenting the Intensity." We hope the information shared here is helpful in guiding you as the expert of your own children. Trust yourself, follow your instincts, and keep exploring new ways to parent.

Hey, I’m Anouk Briere-Godbout, and here on "Parenting the Intensity" we’ll talk all about how we can drop the “general parenting advice” that doesn't work with our intensely emotional kids anyway and let go of the unrealistic expectations society puts on us as parents. Together we'll find solutions and ideas that work for YOU and YOUR kids. Chances are you know what they need, but you need a little inspiration to keep going and permission to do things differently and help you fully trust that you already are a wonderful parent to your exceptional, but challenging, kids.
Each month (or maybe a little bit more frequently, will see) on “Parenting the Intensity” you’ll get some thought provoking and comforting exchanges and reflections on mainstream parenting so you can put things into perspective, redefine what parenting means to YOU and YOUR kids and finally enjoy your family life without constant fear of the next outburst.
