This week on Parents You've Got This - The Expert Guide to Parenthood we are discussing bullying. This is a big word - and a loaded one - and something that as a parent, you never want your child to experience.
Bullying behaviour can take numerous forms, from verbal teasing to physical threats, exclusion, mean comments, online threats, or malicious posts or messages in chat groups. It is intentional, repetitive and reflective of a power imbalance.
We welcome our Child Psychologist Dr Deirdre Brandner to help us all navigate this tricky topic and provide us with a tool kit to help our children build the skills and resilience they need if they see or experience bullying behaviour.
We discuss:
- Bullying happens in different ways, shapes and forms. What actually counts as bullying?
- What are some signs that your child may be experiencing bullying
- We don't always know when our child is being bullied. Why it can be hard for our child to tell us?
- If you suspect your child is being bullied, Deirdre shares suggestions to help your child to open up, especially if they keep saying “I'm fine”
- What a parent should say or do if their child opens up to them and says that they are being bullied
- How to maintain trust with your child if they don't want you to speak with the teacher or the child’s parents but you know they can't make the bullying stop
- How role play can be used to give your child some phrases to respond to a bully
- The best way to advocate for your child without escalating the situation
- If your child is the one doing the bullying, how do you best handle this
- How online bullying should be treated and if it is a different approach to in person bullying
- How to tell if your child needs professional support
