Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) ensures that eligible voters are automatically registered to vote whenever they interact with government agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. AVR eliminates the burden of registering to vote. Additionally, it keeps voter rolls more accurate by creating a constant stream of updates between registration agencies and election officials, and by reducing the odds of mistakes caused by processing paper registration forms by hand. Furthermore, AVR increases registration rates, cleans up voter rolls, and saves states money. Polls have shown that most people haven’t registered to vote because of either inconvenience or not knowing how to register, which AVR would greatly reduce the burden of. Implementing AVR is the first step to ensuring that all citizens have the ability to exercise their most fundamental right to self-govern. Several other states (such as Oregon, Colorado, and California) have already implemented AVR, which has led to significant increases in voter turnout. I believe that New York State should enact legislation that guarantees that all eligible citizens are automatically registered to vote whenever they interact with the DMV and/or other designated Automatic Voter Registration agencies. The low rates of participation in our electoral process have caused the opinions and voices of millions of Americans to be unheard of. Voting is one of the most basic civic duties entitled to all Americans, and a majority of Americans have become disenfranchised with our electoral process due to stringent voter registration laws.
