It's all GP Melbourne and UMA treats this week as we wind down from the party that was Grand Prix Melbourne and three straight days of Magic in all forms. It wouldn't be the amazing weekend it was without all our new friends and listeners we got to catch up with, it was an overwhelmingly affirming experience reminding us of why we love the game and community, and are creating a podcast about it in the first place! We run through all that happened over the weekend, plus finally steering the conversation to the controversial masters set to end all masters sets (for now), including expected value, pricing and value implications, predictions, and a healthy dose of hype. So settle in, pour yourself something nice, and enjoy the Jam.
As always we'd love to hear from you, especially if you're in the Melbourne area and would be in to a game at some stage, please don't be a stranger and drop us a message at [email protected], or find us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/passthemagicjam/.

Animar is a commander that doesn't need a huge introduction. As a commander that received most of its notoriety from the partial Paris Milligan rule days where that type of thing could be heavily abused into busted opening hands, the general threat assessment on animar hasn't really waned much. Most players will become a little cautious with the Temur elemental appearing on a table, and the reason being that he's still quite the powerhouse. As a deck thats angled towards the competive side, Josh's list has some of the expected animar suite of tools plus a whole bunch of his personal spice to taste, with the goal of getting the bouncing engine online early game, and exploding for the win.
Josh is also making minor changes and tweaks to this list, especially as new relevant pieces are printed. You can find the volatile decklist here: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/animar-combo-deck-1/?cat=custom&sort=
As always we'd love to hear from you, especially if you're running an animar list of your own (or like Sam hates seeing it on the other side of the table), please don't be a stranger and drop us a message at [email protected], or find us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/passthemagicjam/.

It's commander staples time again! This we get fiery and impulsive with the creativity and explosiveness found in the red portion of the colour pie. Red is typically seen as not the greatest colours in EDH due to some significant shortcomings (card draw and enchantment removal to name a few) however it contains more than enough exciting, splashy cards that are completely capable of mowing down commander tables. Red is an excellent support colour to pair with some of those stronger colours, but with recent printings to add to the suite, Red on it's own has been seeing a strong bolster to it's options. Overall it's a colour that can be a blast to play, often with an array of surprises and splashy moves your opponents couldn't possibly predict. So grab some hot sauce, get comfy and enjoy the madness of the colour pie that is red.
As always we'd love to hear from you, especially on the topic of staples you love to play in red, please don't be a stranger and drop us a message at [email protected], or find us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/passthemagicjam/.

What a week, on top of cracking more Assassin's Trophies than we know what to do with, we've seen the first week of the crazy new Magic hotness of Guilds of Ravnica making splashes as a sweet limited set, into our commander sleeves, and of course our wallets. We run through some fun stuff from prerelease, new cards that are going straight into the EDH decks, and leading into some great cards to pick up on the cheap in this current price climate due to releases and rotation. (Hoard those Chromatic Lanterns!)
As always we'd love to hear from you, and let us know what you're thinking of the set. Please don't be a stranger and drop us a message at [email protected], or find us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/passthemagicjam/.

Wall tribal! It's a casual players dream, mixing powerful efficient creatures and flavour bursting at the seams. Core Set 19 gifted us with a new favourite for the archetype, Arcades the Strategist, and like many wall enthusiasts Josh went straight to work on brewing a list of spice, jank, power and self expression. Evolved from a former list led by Doran the Siege Tower, Josh runs through the process of switching black for blue in this new and improved version of his beloved "build a wall and get over it" deck. We also talk all stars, surprise finds, weaknesses, spicy win cons, and of course some incredible early card art. All this plus we crack a special pack of Modern Masters 15 for something different, plus a little reflection on our first 22 episodes of this podcast; time has really flown and we're grateful to all that have listened and supported this endeavour - we've got no intention of slowing down! Also tune in next week for the Guilds of Ravnica prerelease re-cap!

Ahhh. We never tire of spoiler season, it’s like having little birthdays scattered throughout the year - the joy of the reveals, the new commanders, musing over possibilities of broken combos with new mechanics. What a time!
This season has of course been no different. Since the last episode, all save a few cards of Guilds of Ravnica have now been revealed, and it certainly is a tasty buffet! From the looks of it all the limited environment looks to be a complex blast to play, but today we’ll be looking mainly at our big juicy targets for commander play, of which there's a bunch to discuss for our favorite casual format. So settle in, have the bartender fix you your guild cocktail of choice and enjoy some casual discussions of all the new ravnican commander hotness.

It's time to sparkle shiny dragon! If you enjoy dropping an uninteractable threat, strapping it up with equipment then gently caressing your opponents life total (to 0) whilst ultimating planeswalkers and digging up your graveyard then this is the deck for you! At the helm of this deck is none other than Esper elder dragon enigma Chromium the mutable and has been Sam's subject of fascination ever since the card was spoiled. The deck has been a bit of a new hit on our tables with fun, value filled games with plenty of spicy avenues allowed thanks to a distinct artifact/historic theme. This shiny dragon does it all, and could well be Sam's new favorite legendary dragon (he really should be an artifact too, but can't win them all...).

It's commander staples time again! Where better to continue our journey through the colour pie inspecting our favourite format staples than with arguably our collective favourite colour and most extensive of these lists; of course Green! Once you've tasted the sweet sweet ramp and fixing, the beef in quality and/or quantity and also the surprising breadth of versatile and powerful card advantage and recursion, it's hard to ever look back at other colours once you've built a deck with green as a feature. There's a reason we have the softest of spots for the colour, and what we find to be one of the most fundamental joys in magic, purely playing your spells, especially early in the game.
The cards on our list are the most played and brewed with cards that we use, including some well known important pieces, but also the lesser known pieces of spice that don't see so much play - but all together importantly the pieces that will see a wide range of play in multiple decks and are always a great idea to pick up for your collection if possible, as they will continue to reward your deck brews for years to come.
If you'd like to see a condensed list of our pet staples for your next trip to the LGS to raid the commander binder, you can find those below.

Welcome back folks for another week of casual discussion about casual magic! This week we finally saw the full reveal of by far our favourite annual release, and as the general community has expressed there was something off, something different this time - like the garlic was left out of what has historically been a rock solid dish. Tune in as we breakdown the overall release in terms of value, playability and even what it means as a precedent and for the game we love moving forward. On a positive note we'll highlight some of the best designed new legendaries in recent memories and the plethora of decks that result once we put our brewing hats on - what a week!!
