🦴What is Osteomalacia?
Osteomalacia = “soft bones” in adults, caused by defectivemineralization of the bone matrix. It's most commonly due to vitamin D deficiency, leading to pain,weakness, and increased fracture risk.
🧒 In children, thesame process is called rickets – affecting growth and causing skeletaldeformities.
🧪Pathophysiology MadeSimple:
- Osteoid (bone framework) is laid down normally but fails to harden due to lack of calcium & phosphate
- Without enough vitamin D, these minerals aren't absorbed well
- End result: weak bones, pseudofractures, proximal muscle weakness

🩺Symptoms &Clinical Features:
• Diffuse bone pain(esp. hips, ribs, spine)
• Proximal muscleweakness (difficulty climbing stairs, standing)
• Waddling gait
• Fragilityfractures
• Fatigue
• In kids (rickets):bowed legs, knock knees, poor growth, ricketic rosary
📸X-ray Findings:
• Cortical thinning
• Pseudofractures(Looser’s zones)
• In children –changes at growth plates (e.g. cupping, fraying)
💊Management Summary:
• 🌞 Correct the vitamin D deficiency (usually oral cholecalciferol)
• 🥛 Ensure adequatecalcium intake
• 📈 Monitor with blood tests (Vit D, calcium, phosphate, PTH)
• 🧘 Lifestyle: encourage safe sun exposure, dietary changes
• 🩺 Treat underlying causes (malabsorption, renal disease, etc.)
🔁Treatment Phases:
• Loading dose of Vitamin D for deficiency
• Maintenance dose for long-term prevention
📈Prognosis:
