Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He was the Healer then, and He is the Healer now. He was the Savior then, and He is still the Savior today.That conviction is where we begin when we pray for healing. We come to a loving Father whose heart has been revealed through His Son. God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27 NKJV). This is the foundation for learning to hear God. He knows us completely—when we sit down and rise up, every thought and need, even every hair on our heads—and He wants us to know His voice. Hearing Him isn’t reserved for prophets, pastors, or unusually spiritual people. It’s part of the ordinary life of everyone who follows Jesus.The question isn’t whether God can speak. Scripture shows Him speaking from beginning to end, and church history is filled with believers who learned to recognize His leading. The question is how we distinguish His voice from our own desires, conscience, public opinion, fear, accusation, and pressure. How do we recognize the Shepherd’s tone and character?God often speaks through the Bible and through a quiet stream of spontaneous thoughts, impressions, feelings, and pictures. Sometimes He draws our attention to a passage as we read. At other times, an impression comes while we’re praying, working, driving, or talking with someone. We began this series with Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42. Martha was busy serving while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His word. When Martha grew upset that Mary was not helping, Jesus replied, “One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part” (Luke 10:42). The Message puts it this way: “One thing only is essential.” Mary quieted herself and chose to listen, not only to be taught but also to relate to Jesus.Jesus was not saying that serving is wrong. Martha’s problem was that serving had taken precedence over waiting on the Lord, hearing His voice, and responding to His words. Many things can help us grow as Christians: Bible reading plans, study tools, commentaries, sermons, and good teaching. But Jesus identified the essential thing. Hearing God begins with the daily choice to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen.Today I’m launching a new series on hearing God. Over the next several weeks, we will explore whether God still speaks today, how we recognize His voice, and how we discern His will. Faith grows as we learn to hear Him.Many of us need a fresh word from the Lord in this season. We face decisions, uncertainty, family needs, health concerns, and questions about purpose. The answer to every specific question isn’t found on page 637, or any other page, of our Bible. Scripture is foundational, and God often highlights a passage at exactly the right moment. What if today were “a certain day”?This message grows out of four weeks spent learning to commune with the Holy Spirit—how to fellowship with Him, trust Him, and partner with Him. It also points to another essential subject: learning to hear God. Those themes converge whenever we pray for healing, because healing is not something we accomplish for God. The Holy Spirit does more than visit us in a church service or help us through an occasional crisis. He is God with us and within us. He fellowships with us, leads us, strengthens us, and assures us that we belong to Christ. Scripture says that God has sealed us with the Holy Spirit and placed His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. That seal gives us confidence for today and hope for all that God has promised for the future.This is where the series on communion with the Holy Spirit has been leading. We have seen that the Holy Spirit is our friend, helper, and partner. There is power in unity. Unity does not mean uniformity; it does not require us all to be the same. It means we are united around a common vision and mission. When unity leads to partnership, something greater becomes possible.Even on a purely human level, people working together can accomplish far more than they could alone. As the familiar acronym for team reminds us, “Together, Everyone Accomplishes More.”

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force to be studied from afar. He is the third person of the Godhead, co-eternal with the Father and the Son. He has been given to live within us, come alongside us, transform us, comfort us, and empower us for God’s purposes.

At Pentecost, fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the church. We read about this outpouring in Acts 2 and see His continuing work in Acts 3 and throughout the early chapters of Acts. The Holy Spirit came to empower the church and to lead God’s people into life and mission.

We do not become Christlike merely by trying harder to behave like good Christians. Paul teaches that we are being transformed and conformed to Christ’s image. The Word of God is indispensable to that transformation: “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). But the Spirit is the One who makes God’s grace effective in our lives. He molds and shapes us so that the fruit of the Spirit—the character and life of Christ—becomes increasingly evident in us.

Healing is not a reward we earn.

It is covenant mercy revealed in Jehovah-Rapha and secured for us by Jesus Christ, the Mediator and Guarantee of a better covenant.

That truth must become the anchor of our faith, because much of what we call faith is rooted in experience. If something good happens, we say God is good. If a prayer is not answered as we expected, we begin to question His heart. If someone is healed, we believe healing is possible; if someone is not healed, we may quietly revise our theology in response to disappointment.

God did not create us merely to know about Him. He created us to know Him—to walk with Him, enjoy His presence, hear His voice, and live in fellowship with Him.We see this from the beginning of Scripture. In Genesis, God created Adam and Eve in His image and placed them in the garden. Even after their encounter with the serpent and their fall into sin, they recognized the sound of the Lord coming in the garden in the cool of the day. They knew His voice because they were accustomed to His presence. God’s original purpose for humanity included communion with Him
