It seems that before Judas led a great multitude of Soldiers armed with weapons into the grotto where Jesus and His other diciples had gathered, he warned the chief priests and religious leaders about Jesus's phenomenal power. This may explain why they felt they needed a distinct signal to identify their target and let the troops know they should move in swiftly to make their arrest.
