The prescript (1:1-2)

Eph 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and who are faithful in Christ Jesus:

Eph 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

If we choose our own way and reject the Lord's way, then the choices that we do get to make will more often than not be bad ones.

There are also parts of our lives that are completely out of our control. The body we are put in, our parents, time and place of birth were all chosen for us. Also, the ministry and gifts that God bestows upon us...

Paul the apostle of Christ by the will of God. He makes it clear that he didn't apply for the job.

The prescript (1:1-2)

Eph 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and who are faithful in Christ Jesus:

Eph 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

There are no translation issues in these first two verses, except for the fact that in some of the earlier manuscripts "at Ephesus" is not found. We could spend a class or two looking at the Greek words and syntax and come up with the same translation.

Paul - the Gentile name of Saul of Tarsus. It was common for Hebrew families to give their sons a Gentile name as well as a Hebrew one.

Title: Ephesians: Outline and relation to other Pauline epistles.

Very general outline:

1. Prescript (1:1-2)

2. The new humanity, a divine creation (1:3 - 3:21)

3. The new humanity in earthly life (4:1 - 6:20)

4. Closing (6:21-24)

Textual evidence throws doubt on whether the letter was initially sent to Ephesus. From the letter, it would seem that it was sent to those whom Paul had not visited, and therefore, as the letter to the Colossians, a place Paul had not visited, this letter may have been sent to the churches in the Lycus valley, possibly to Laodicea.

Title: Ruth 4:14-15. God intervenes in every life.

The kinsman redeemer in the OT delivers or rescues the needy. He redeems property or persons and even avenges the murder of a relative.

Goel (redeemer) is deliverer/savior/vindicator in the OT. Jesus makes salvation, deliverance, and vindication a reality for all who believe in Him.

He redeems your life from the pit. All who fear Him will live and walk in the blessedness of that redemption.

Two trees in the Garden enforces adult morality.

Gen 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;

Title: Ruth 4:14-15. Kinsman Redeemer, part 23.

The price: the blood of Christ. Refers to the entire act of salvation.

We are in 1Jo 1 where John writes that the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin. We are looking at this phrase in light of the entire book and especially John's opening to the letter, which is chapter 1 in our Bibles.

The reason John wrote the letter was to identify the false teachers who had been wreaking havoc in the souls of some believers and to ensure to all of them that they possessed eternal life in Christ.
