  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 28 - Predestination - what is love? Jos 14-17
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 28 - Predestination - what is love? Jos 14-17.
    Announcements/opening prayer:
Only in Jesus Christ do we know what love is, namely in His deed for us.
The Romans nailed thousands of men to crosses, but the believer knows the deed of Christ in willfully being judged for the sins of the world though He was guilty of none of them.
1Jo 3:16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
Love is defined, not in some general way, but in a deed - Christ laying down His life for us. It is not only a deed, but a person, and in fact, this one deed cannot be separated from the person of Christ since it was His entire life, both spiritual and physical that was given...

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 27 - Predestination - what is love? Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 27 - Predestination - what is love? Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
There is no conceivable human attitude or conduct which can unequivocally be designated by the name of "love." Love lies beyond man's disunion with God and so we must go beyond man on onto God to find it.
What is love? The Bible does not fail to give us the answer.
    1Jo 4:16 God is love
The emphasis is on the word God and not love. Only he who knows God knows what love is. We do not come to first know what love is and then find and know God.
No one knows God unless God reveals Himself to him. Man cannot seek for God. And so, no one knows what love is...

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 26 - Predestination - what is love? Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 26 - Predestination - what is love? Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
One final note about the will of God, the truth from God, pure action in God as opposed to the judging of man in the knowledge of good and evil - the love of God.
1Co 13:2 And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
1Co 13:3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
It should not surprise any believer that in his lifelong study of the word of God that he would return to the subject of love quite...

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 25 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 25 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
The believer, due to his union with Christ and the power of GHS is able to have a knowledge of the truth (1Jo 2:20) and to intensively investigate the will of God (1Co 2:15).
The fall had shut man out from these treasures due to his disunion with God. In Christ the mystery has been opened and all who believe in Him may know and discern.
And so we fully judge in the realm of God's will, as Christ did. Christ's judgment was not to condemn, as man does, but to save (reconciliation):
Joh 3:17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him....

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 24 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 24 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
We turn to the decisions of the believer in dealing with the world, others, circumstances, himself, and with God. The word of God calls this intensive judging. There is no contradiction here with the command to judge not.
There is a judging that springs from the believer in union with God. It is a discerning of the proper action according to the will of God.
So then, it is proper to entitle this work in the soul as judgment, but it is not of the same fabric at all of the judgment of man.
1Co 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them,...

  • The allotment of the land, part 23 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 23 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
There are many ways in which man tries to deal with the reality of his world which he calls the achievements and attitudes of noble humanity.
I'd like to open tonight by looking at a few of these. One cannot help but have sympathy for the world and you must remember that there is not one of them that the love of God has not encompassed.
Reason: Cannot perceive the depths of that which is evil or holy since both of them are unreasonable.
That which is holy is God and His grace is unreasonable and illogical. Reason states that man should get what he deserves but grace gives what he doesn't deserve. Evil fights against God. Anyone who thinks that they can...

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 22 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 22 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
The passing of judgment does not spring from the vices of the human heart or from its wickedness, rather judgment is equivalent to apostasy and is itself the source of wickedness and vice.
Judgment is the essence of fallen man, manifesting itself in his thoughts, actions, and speech. He cannot see this in himself for he perceives everything from his own viewpoint of the knowledge of good and evil. The Pharisee or fallen man cannot see it unless he be enlightened by the gospel.
The Pharisee and the Pharisee in all men is only seen by the one who has been unified to God through the cross of Christ.
2Co 3:12 Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness...

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 21 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 21 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
In essence all fallen men are Pharisees who at some level seek salvation in their own definition of good when true good is only found in the person of Christ.
All fallen men are to some extent Pharisees. They each have a knowledge of good and evil and by it they are judges who judge themselves, others, situations, and God. Society and culture label them as good or bad judges or even indifferent, but they are each judges none the less. The wise, noble, and strong of 1Co 1 are those who are so in man's knowledge and ways of good and evil.
Mat 7:1 "Do not judge lest you be judged."
From the only one who had unity with God, He strikes a...

Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 20 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements / opening prayer:
Christ came into the world to do the will of the Father and by that will He sanctified us and entered us into the Holy of Holies in heaven with Him where there is not a whisper of man's deprived notion of good and evil.
Heb 10:5 Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says,
    "Sacrifice and offering You hast not desired, But a body You have prepared for Me;
Heb 10:6 In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.
Heb 10:7 "Then I said, 'Behold, I have come (In the roll of the book it is written of Me) To do Your will, O God.'"...

  • Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 19 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
Title: Joshua and Judges: The allotment of the land, part 19 - Predestination; Jos 14-17.
    Announcements/opening prayer:
In our study of the book of Joshua we arrived at the allotment of the land to the tribes. Caleb received the land that Moses had promised and then Judah was given the south by lot, and sure enough it was the same area as Caleb's land, also a son of Judah. This revealed beyond a doubt that the lot was not a game of chance, but was fully under God's control. Next came the allotment to the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim. The land allotted to them still possessed the remnants of the Raphaim, supposed giants who had chariots of iron for war. Caleb's land also contained people who had survived Joshua's campaign, but Caleb was confident that the Lord would empower him to drive them out. In contrast to his faith, the sons of Joseph asked for...
