In the survival show Alone, each person exists alone in a harsh environment for as long as they can. The latest season dropped the contestants in different locations in North Labrador. The season was called Alone Frozen. It got cold pretty fast and food was very scarce. Each contestant gets a satellite phone. All they have to do is push a button on that phone and the producers will come and get them out. When you're starving and cold in a shelter you made in the frozen forest of nowhere, one call gets you out.

Maybe we should take the final petition in the Lord's Prayer, "Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil," and conclude that we should get away from the temptation altogether and get out of the world.

Should we leave society and the people of the world and isolate ourselves in the wilderness?

In the first two centuries of the...

One of the ways that we can discover areas in life that are very dangerous to our spiritual lives is to see the major themes of the Scripture. It takes some doing. We have to read and digest and read and digest some more and then pray for insight, and with a humble and energetic mind, we will see main themes jump out. Some of these are easier to find than others, and the easier ones are those that entire epistles address. For instance, Colossians deals with the spiritual life in the midst of persecution and false doctrine. We come to know, therefore, that we have to be...

Some three or four decades before the birth of Christ, Rome's first heated swimming pool was built on the Esquiline Hill. The location, just outside the city's ancient walls, was a prime one. In time it would become a showcase for some of the wealthiest people in the world: an immense expanse of luxury villas and parks. But there was a reason why the land beyond the Esquiline Gate had been left undeveloped for so long. For many centuries, from the very earliest days of Rome, it had been a place of the dead. When laborers first began work on the swimming...

The devil will never be proud of you. The world he rules will never celebrate your spiritual victories. He doesn't care and neither do they. Your spiritual growth only makes the devil hunger more to tear you down.

How do you feel about sin?

In the film Grand Canyon, an immigration attorney breaks out of a traffic jam and attempts to bypass it. His route takes him along streets that seem progressively darker and more deserted. Then comes the predictable nightmare: his expensive car stalls on one of those alarming streets whose teenage guardians favor expensive guns and sneakers. The attorney does manage to phone for a tow truck, but before it arrives, five young street toughs surround his disabled car and threaten him with...

The laws of God tell us how to get along. In fact, modern western society, swims in the waters of Christian laws of morality. Hundreds of years ago in Christian Europe laws were constructed for the state, which were based on the Bible, and from that biblical perspective came the idea that every human, rich or poor, has natural rights. The Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence state this idea as if it had always been.

How many did you commit yesterday? Imagine if we were truly aware of all of them (sins of omission also), and we had one of those clickers that counts. You would check it every day and either rue the day or count it a good day. A good day would be, "Only 490 sins today! High five." A bad day, "987 sins!? What a terrible day this was." It's only just before noon.

Who among us had the least? Come to the head of the class. Who had the most? You might as well come up...

Paraphrasing something I heard pastor Greg Laurie teach last Sunday, "If your knowledge is not changing you it's not worth much."

Col 2:20-22

If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do...
